Aug. 11: Whitaker Gallery opens fall season with Lost exhibit

Monday, August 11, 2014

FREDERICK, Md.—A trio of sculptures constructed from old technology items and timeworn advertising fliers will be on display Sept. 4-28 in the Whitaker Campus Center Gallery at Hood College.

An artist's reception will take place Sept. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Baltimore artist Ryan Murray incorporates retro video game consoles, a space helmet-shaped television showing a performance video and a series of old fliers posted by individuals searching for lost items in his exhibit entitled Lost. He uses these objects to evoke in the viewer a sense of nostalgia, sorrow for a recent-but-bygone past and a sense of hope for new opportunities for growth.

Murray, an assistant professor of electronic media and film at Towson University, earned a bachelor of fine arts from Carnegie Mellon University and a master of fine arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has exhibited in galleries, museums and film festivals across the United States and Canada.
