Generous gift supports faculty achievement, student scholarships

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

FREDERICK, Md.— Hood College recently received a generous gift from the foundation of longtime Frederick philanthropists Henry P. and M. Page Durkee Laughlin.

The gift will be used for student scholarships and faculty achievement.

The Laughlins have supported the College with gifts since the 1970s. They founded the Dr. Henry P. and M. Page Durkee Laughlin Faculty Professional Award, presented annually to a faculty member who has made significant contributions to his or her profession through scholarship and exceptional service to Hood. In 2003 they established the Laughlins Scholars Program to recognize academic excellence.

"Hank and Page Laughlin continue to live a life of philanthropy, and Hood and many others have been beneficiaries of their generosity," said Ronald J. Volpe, president of the College. "The students, faculty and staff at Hood remain so very grateful."

The Laughlins were awarded honorary doctoral degrees during the College's 2003 commencement exercises as a tribute to their longtime support of and service to Hood.
