Integrated marketing communications is 31st major

Thursday, August 1, 2013

FREDERICK, Md.—A new major that combines the theories and best practices in marketing and communication arts will be offered at Hood College beginning this fall.

Integrated marketing communications was born out of the recognition that in current professional business environments, marketing and communications are closely intertwined. The major provides a solid background in a developing field that emphasizes the importance of integrating public relations and marketing strategies to communicate with consumers and company clients about a product, service or organization. The types of careers students with this major would likely pursue—advertising, promotion, marketing managers—are forecast to grow by 14 percent in the next five to seven years.

"In today's world, marketing and communication are integrated functions," said Donna Bertazzoni, professor of journalism. "This new major will give students an opportunity to learn best practices in both areas, from research to writing to social media. In addition, Hood offers a robust internship program that will give students the chance to apply what they learn in the classroom to the real world."

The new program brings the total majors offered at Hood to 31 and satisfies the College's mission of integrating liberal arts and professional learning.
