Last Train of Thought sponsors benefit rap concert

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

FREDERICK, Md.—A benefit concert to aid children in the Frederick area who are victims of abuse will be held Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. in the Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall at Hood College.

The student-led organization, The Last Train of Thought, will sponsor Hood alumna and rap musician Chris Canon in concert, along with other student performers. Donations will be accepted at the door; proceeds will be donated to the Child Advocacy Center of Frederick County.

Conceived in January 2011 by Hood student Devon Tucker and Canon, whose real name is Carson, Last Train’s mission is to raise community awareness about child abuse through education, action and service, and to mentor disadvantaged youth by providing them with safe, friendly and positive environments. The organization, which boasts a membership of about 20 students, also has been successful in establishing Last Train chapters in local high and middle schools.

Group members volunteer with the Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Frederick, serving as coaches and middle school youth counselors. Many of the Last Train members also serve as mentors and tutors with the AmeriCorps program and with the Frederick County high school Necktie Clubs, a mentoring group that encourages male students to dress professionally and helps prepare them for the workforce.

Other group projects include a coat drive to benefit the Second Street and Hope organization, which feeds, clothes and provides shelter and spiritual guidance for the homeless, addicted and working poor of Frederick; and a canned food drive to help replenish the food pantries in Frederick County.

The Child Advocacy Center provides a comfortable, private, child-friendly, multicultural setting, as well as comprehensive and coordinated multidisciplinary services to victims of child abuse and their families.
