Mathematics educator discusses innovations in teaching algebra

FREDERICK, Md.—A noted mathematics educator will give a lecture on innovations in methods of teaching algebra Sept.12 at 6 p.m. in Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall as part of the College's annual mathematics education lecture series.

Daniel Chazan, Ed.D., is professor of mathematics in the department of teaching and learning, policy and leadership at The University of Maryland College Park and director of the university's Center for Mathematics Education. He will discuss recent developments in mathematics teaching techniques and describe how using animations, comic strips and online questionnaires have been effective in helping mathematics teachers improve their teaching skills.

Chazan oversees the center's research on the teaching of mathematics in local urban schools, the preparation of teachers for elementary and secondary schools at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and the education of researchers and teacher educators. He co-manages two grants, one that supports doctoral students interested in becoming professors and mathematics education researchers, and the other, a National Science Foundation-funded project that focuses on developing animated representations of teaching to use as learning tools. He has also administered a series of U.S. Department of Education-funded Improving Teacher Quality State Grants that supported an innovative master's program for elementary-certified and middle-grades mathematics teachers.

His books include Beyond Formulas in Mathematics and Teaching: Dynamics of the High School Algebra Classroom, and an edited volume, Embracing Reason: Egalitarian Ideals and High School Mathematics Teaching.
