May 30: Summer Chamber Music Festival returns for 29th season

Thursday, May 30, 2013

FREDERICK, Md.—Hood College's Summer Chamber Music Festival will return for its 29th season with concerts on five Thursdays in June and July.

The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will take place at Grace United Church of Christ.

The series will open June 20 with a return appearance by the Appalachian Wind Quintet. Founding musicians Barbara Spicher, flute; Ed Stanley, oboe; Rick Mogensen, clarinet; Scott Cassada, bassoon; and Ed Schupp, oboe, comprise the quintet. The program includes the children's classic, Peter and the Wolf, as well as the sextet for piano and winds by Francis Poulenc.

Organist Wayne L. Wold, associate professor of music and college organist, will direct the June 27 concert, which will feature music for violin, flute, oboe, bassoon and harpsichord by Bach, Vivaldi, Geminiani and Telemann.

Four young vocal soloists, appearing as this year's Sidney Silverman Young Artists, will present an all-Brahms program July 11. Along with pianists Lester and David Conway, they will perform Hungarian dances for piano, four-hands, solo lieder and the Liebeslieder waltzes for four singers and piano duet.

On July 18, Noel Lester, pianist and concert manager, will present a recital with commentary, The Riches of Rags. Tracing the evolution of ragtime from its roots through modern compositions, Lester will play works by Gottschalk, Foster, Joplin, Confrey, Gershwin and many others.

The series concludes July 25 with the first annual Phyllis and Ardine Gorden String Concert, featuring the Aeolus String Quartet, in residence at the University of Maryland. They will perform works by Purcell, Haydn and Beethoven.

Grace UCC is located at 25 East 2nd Street in Frederick. Parking is available in the Church Street parking deck.

The concerts are free and no tickets are required.
