Nov. 18: Community invited to annual candlelight vespers service

Monday, November 21, 2011

FREDERICK, Md.—A candlelight vespers service, a long-standing Hood College tradition that includes seasonal music, dance, prayers and readings, will be held Sunday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Hood’s Coffman Chapel.

A musical prelude will begin at 7:15 p.m. The service is free and open to the public.

Many of Hood’s student musical groups will take part in the service, including the choir and chamber singers; the dance ensemble; and the wind, jazz, early music, a cappella and string ensembles. Wayne L. Wold, associate professor of music and college organist, will lead the congregational singing of several Christmas carols.

Members of the Hood community will present scripture lessons. Holiday prayers will be offered by the Rev. Beth O’Malley, McHenry Dean of the Chapel, and a Christmas story will be presented by students from the drama department; and Joe Brady, director of Hood Theatre. The service will close with the candlelight singing of “Silent Night.”

For more information, contact O’Malley at (301) 696-3436.
