Sept. 10: Baltimore artists displays works in Whitaker Gallery

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

FREDERICK, Md.—A series of medium- to large-scale paintings will be displayed in Hood College's Whitaker Gallery September 19 through October 20.

A reception is scheduled for September 19 from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by an artist talk from 7 to 8 p.m., both in the gallery.

The paintings in Projection, by Baltimore artist Nick Van Zanten, use the image of a simple grid as source material. In solid colors, the grid is painted on canvas and chipboard, then distorted, erased and repainted. Successive paintings then utilize the images created on prior paintings as source material, linking the pieces to one another and making the creative process evident to the viewer.

Van Zanten has exhibited his work at galleries and institutions, including the Pratt Institute; Front Room Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Broad Street Gallery in Hartford, Conn.; and Shoot the Lobster in New York, N.Y. He earned a bachelors of fine arts degree from the Pratt Institute in 2011 and completed his post-baccalaureate certificate from Maryland Institute College of Art this spring.

The Whitaker Gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
