How safe is campus?

Hood College is very safe and our campus safety department strives to provide a safe learning environment. The Office of Campus Safety is located in the Whitaker Campus Center on the second floor. Security officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Dial “0” from campus phones to report problems. A safety officer will provide necessary escort services at any time. Please call ext. 3548 for this service.

Where can I obtain my Student ID Card?

ID cards are issued by the Office of Campus Safety located on the second floor of the Whitaker Campus Center. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. After normal business hours, please stop by the communication center on the first floor of Whitaker for assistance.

What are the Red Emergency Phones?

Red Emergency Phones, located in all the residence halls, the commuter lounge, the Whitaker Campus Center, Gambrill Gymnasium, the Wellness Center, and the Sports Medicine Center, connect directly to the telecommunications officer and are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In case of an emergency, pick up the nearest phone and explain the nature of the emergency.

What are the Blue Light Phones?

These outdoor emergency phones are identified by a blue light at the top of the phone post and provide immediate access to the telecommunications officer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can be found behind Brodbeck Hall, in front of the French House, behind Alumnae House, in the Whitaker Campus Center parking lot, in the Chapel Center parking lot, and at the Huntsinger Aquatic Center.

Is there a lost and found?

Items found on campus are held at the Communication Center on the first floor of the Whitaker Campus Center.

What if I am going to be absent from class?

Students who are unable to attend classes due to illness or other personal reasons should notify their professors before class. They should also notify the Dean of Students who can provide a verification note to the student’s professors as long as there is a legitimate reason for missing class.

How can my family contact me in an emergency?

On weekdays during regular office hours, family members can contact Campus Safety at 301-696-3548 or the Dean of Students at 301-696-3573 to get a message to you.

On nights and weekends, family members can call the College’s main number, 301-663-3131, to speak with the safety office on duty who will attempt to find you on campus.

What happens in the case of inclement weather?

The decision to cancel or delay classes due to inclement weather is generally made by 6 a.m. Decisions about evening classes are made as weather situations develop. Closing and delay information is broadcast on local radio stations and a recording is left on the College’s main phone line, 301-663-3131.

Hood Alert is the school’s emergency notification system that sends notifications via voice, email, and text messaging. Sign up for this emergency notification system at “Hood Alert.”

If classes are still in session but you are unable to make it to campus, contact your professor or academic department.

How can I get involved on campus as a commuter student?

Commuter students are encouraged to participate in the more than 60 clubs and organizations on campus. With so many choices, it is easy for every student to find something that satisfies their interests. Commuter students can also become part of the Commuter Council, which represents the needs of Hood’s undergraduate commuter population to the school’s administration and in the Student Government Association.

Can I eat at Coblentz dining hall or purchase a meal plan as a commuter?

Yes, the dining hall is open to all Hood College students. Commuter students are encouraged to purchase meal plans. The Commuter Plan includes: $400 Blazer Bucks that can used anywhere on campus at any time, 50 meals per semester to be used in the dining hall, and unlimited meal exchanges at the Blazer.
