Chinese ceramic artists offer workshop, lectures, exhibit

FREDERICK, Md.—Two award-winning Chinese ceramic artists will offer a workshop and lectures, and their work will be on display in March and April at Hood College.

Xing Zhang and Sha Cai will conduct an intensive four-day workshop on traditional Chinese sculpting methods March 24-27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 1 in the Tatem Arts Center. Instruction will focus on a variety of methods and techniques for building shapes and the human figure, choosing and preparing appropriate materials, surface treatments, drying methods and burnishing processes.

The ceramics works of Zhang and Cai will be featured in an exhibit titled “Contemporary Chinese Sculpture” March 24-April 3 in the College’s Beneficial-Hodson Library and Technology Center lobby. An opening reception and lectures by the two artists on contemporary Chinese ceramics are scheduled for March 25 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Xing is associate professor of ceramic arts at the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghu University. His research focuses on traditional ceramics decorative design and contemporary ceramic sculpture. His work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions in China and abroad, and three of his pieces are in the permanent collection of the National Art Museum of China. Cai is associate professor of art at Xi An University of Arts and Science and director of the ceramics program.
