Prerequisite: BMS 524 or permission of the instructor. (First semester/3 credits/lab fee)
This integrated lab-lecture course provides basic concepts and hands-on experience with
common molecular genetics and recombinant DNA methods. Topics include techniques for
the isolation of DNA and RNA, gene cloning employing plasmid vectors, DNA sequencing,
polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE),
expression of fusion proteins in E. coli, site-directed mutagenesis, and web-based analysis ofDNA and protein sequence data.
