Facilities


The Tatem Arts Center houses studios for drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking and graphic design, as well as a photography darkroom.

The drawing and painting studios offer large, naturally well-lit work areas. Drawing easels and stools, formatting and framing equipment, as well as storage areas for large works are available. These studios are open to students at any time of day and can be opened for those who wish to work late at night.

Art students have access to graphic design through the Department of English and Communication Arts. The studio features Macintosh computers and two color scanners. Laser printers, a black-and-white printer and a color inkjet printer are networked to the Macs. A large screen television and VCR are also located in this studio and may be connected to the computers for instruction and multimedia work. Students also have access to an Apple digital camera. Enrolled students can use these facilities at all hours.

The photography studio features two darkroom areas and a studio setting. The studio has props, dropcloths and several types of lighting capabilities. The darkrooms have a total of 12 enlargers and are equipped for black and white developing.

The ceramic studios are located in Rooms 1, 2, 2a ,2b, 2c and 3 in Tatem Arts Center, along with two large work areas and a separate kiln room, a glaze room and a clay mixing room. There are 12 wheels available for student use. The ceramics studio is adjacent to an outdoor patio suitable for raku and pit firings.

  • Room 1 houses the wheel area with 12 electric wheels and a kick wheel. It serves as the classroom area and graduate student studios.
  • Room 2 is the hand building room with 5 large canvas, covered tables, an extruder and slab roller.
  • Room 2a is the chemical and equipment storage area.
  • Room 2b is the electric kiln room, housing one large front loading kiln, 3 barrel kilns, 3 test kilns, 2 raku kilns and pit fire equipment.
  • Room 2c is the clay mixing area with a clay mixer and pug mill.
  • Room 3 is the glazing room.

*We also have a 36 cubic foot reduction/salt kiln.
