Our students are strongly encouraged to combine classroom study and participation in joint research projects with faculty with internships and/or study abroad. Because of our location near Washington, D.C., our students have been able to secure internships in Congress, at the White House, the Urban Institute, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Development Bank.
Our students can participate in a Summer Economics/Politics Program managed by our faculty that focuses on the economics and politics of the European Union in Strasbourg, France. Students can also take advantage of exchange programs with universities in Korea and South Africa.
The Summer Research Institute also offers opportunities for unique study to further develop skills and interests. Research topics have included an empirical study on the impact of corruption on economic growth and the effects of Malaysia’s industrial policies on its economic growth. Research papers produced during the Summer Research Institute are often submitted to refereed journals in the academic field, and students present their findings at symposia during the academic year.
Internships in Management
From its location in the greater Washington, D.C., and Baltimore metropolitan areas, Hood is within reach of hundreds of government agencies, nonprofit corporations and financial and industrial organizations—all of which serve as resources for research and internships. Management students have gained valuable on-the-job experience by interning with area accounting firms, banks, chambers of commerce and companies such as Alex Brown & Sons, IBM and DuPont.
