IT Help Sheet

Computer/Internet Access

If you do not know your username and password, you can obtain them from EUC in Alumni Hall, room 401 or by calling EUC at ext. 3622. Press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys on the keyboard simultaneously. You should see a screen with a field for user name, and a field for a password. Enter your user name in the User Name field. Enter your password in the Password field. Click the 'options' button and a field will appear for a domain. If the domain does not say Pergola, change the domain to Pergola by clicking the arrow next to the domain name and selecting Pergola. Then click OK. The PC should then log you in. The login process can take a while (sometimes up to 60 seconds) to complete. If this is the first time you have logged on to a Hood College computer, you will be asked to change your password. Your password must be at least eight characters. If the PC does not log you in, try using another PC. If you are unable to log in on the second PC, call EUC at ext. 3622. It is important to remember to log out before leaving a computer. If you don't log out, anyone could have access to the computer and be able to read and change your files.

Changing your password

If you are at a Windows 2000 or XP machine (lab or open access Hood computer), press Ctrl, Alt and Delete on the keyboard all at once. Select 'change password' and enter your new password twice. Your password must be at least eight characters in length. Note: When you change your Windows (Pergola domain) password, your e-mail password will be changed as well.

Network Storage Space - Personal Folder

Your personal drive is the location where you should save ALL your important information. You can locate your personal drive by double clicking on the 'My Computer' icon on the desktop. You should see several icons, some of which will be named with letters. The Z: drive is your personal space to store important information. No one else can see the information in this drive. The information on this drive is backed up every night; this is the safest place on campus to store your data. Your Z: drive has a capacity of 50MB. If you go over this limit, you will not be allowed to save any more data to this drive! If you are working on an important document, you may want to save it to a CD, floppy or zip drive so that you have a backup copy if there are network problems. CDs have a longer life and are inexpensive. All public labs have CD writers (burners) and at least one Zip drive.

Network Storage Space - Public Folder

Your Z: drive is secure. No one else can see it. But sometimes you may want to save things and allow others to see the things you save. The public folder, also called the U: drive, is completely open. Anyone with a Pergola username can save to this folder and anyone can modify what's been saved there. Don't put any important or private information in the U: drive. There is a 30MB disk quota per individual with the U: drive. However, the U: drive is cleaned out occasionally. If you save something to U: drive it may not be there next week or even the next hour.

E-mail

Students can check their e-mail from any public (usually the lab) computers. The preferred option is to use the Web-based application located on the Hood IT Web page and select the Student Webmail option. You will then need to enter your username into the Username field and your password into the Password field, and then click on the login button. Note: Your username and password will always be the same as the username and password you use to log onto the computer.

E-mail Forwarding

If you want to have your e-mail forwarded to an outside mail account (such as a yahoo.com account), go to the URL: https://mail.hood.edu, enter your username and password and click on 'enter.' Select 'RULES,' then scroll down to 'Redirect All Mail to:' and check this box. In the box below where it says Redirect All Mail to, type the e-mail address where you want all your mail forwarded. Uncheck both the 'Keep a Copy' and 'Do not Redirect Automatic Messages' boxes. Then click on the 'Update' box to finish.

Printing

When you log on in a computer lab, the printer in that lab will automatically become your default printer. By clicking the print shortcut (in such applications as Microsoft Word) the computer will automatically send the file to the printer in that lab. If you want to use another printer (or if the lab printer does not show up for you automatically), right click on 'My Network Places' and select 'search for computers.' Type 'Neptune' in the computer field and click OK. Double-click on the icon for 'Neptune.' Now double-click the printer you wish to use. (You will be asked if you want to set up this network printer. Answer 'yes'). Every full-time student is authorized to print up to 1000 black and white pages per semester on Hood printers without charge; part time students are authorized 500 black and white pages. If you exceed this quota, check the Hood IT Web page (www.hood.edu/adminservices/it.cfm) to obtain the Policy and Procedures for Student Print Quotas.

Once you have logged on to a computer, you can access Blackboard by selecting one of the Web browsers and entering the URL: http://blackboard.hood.edu.
