Installation ceremony to recognize Dean of the Chapel
19-Oct-09
FREDERICK, Md.--A ceremony to recognize the beginning of a ministry and the generosity of an alumna of Hood College will take place Nov. 1 at 3:30 p.m. in Coffman Chapel.
The Rev. Beth O'Malley will be officially installed as the first McHenry Dean of the Chapel for the campus community. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.
The dean of the chapel position is made possible through a gift by former Hood College trustee and alumna Christine McHenry, M.D., '73, who established and funded the position in honor of her parents, Thomas McHenry III, M.D., and Gloria Schmitt McHenry '42, both lifelong supporters of the College.
Ceremony participants include The Rev. Ann Boyd, Ph.D., professor of biology, and The Rev. David Flaherty, pastor of the First United Church, United Church of Christ in Baltimore; performances by the Hood College choir, gospel choir and Wayne Wold, D.M.A., associate professor of music and college organist; and readings by members of Hood College student groups.
O'Malley, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, joined the campus community in August 2008. She has worked to develop and implement creative programming to enrich the religious, spiritual and intellectual life of students and to serve as a liaison to the surrounding religious community.
The Milford, Conn., native earned a bachelor's degree in religion and English from Hiram College and a master of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School.
