Hodson Gallery to host exhibit, lecture by master potter

FREDERICK, Md.--A master potter will exhibit his work Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 in the Hodson Gallery in Tatem Arts Center at Hood College.
A reception will be held Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery, followed by a lecture by the artist entitled "A Life in Clay."
Val Cushing, an internationally renowned ceramic artist, creates utilitarian and visually functional ware. He will discuss his work, the sources of inspiration that have allowed his work to evolve and the continual search for new inspiration.
Cushing is professor emeritus at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, School of Art & Design, where he taught for 40 years. He is a recipient of the 2005 Regis Masters Award, an individual artistýs grant from National Endowment for the Arts, a Fulbright Award and the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts award for Teaching Excellence. His work is included in many private and public collections, including the American Craft Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Renwick Gallery and the Ohi Pottery Museum in Japan.
