Hood Students Awarded Funding for the Davis Projects for Peace Dale Moyers ’10, who serves as president of Life Connection Mission, a nonprofit headquartered in Germantown, Md., and Peggy Moyers ’10 will continue work with the College Educatif D’Excellence, the mission school in Montrouis, Haiti. LCM strives to provide children with a quality education, produce responsible and productive graduates and minister to needs of the community in the village of Montrouis. The group’s goal is to complete the expansion of the mission school by adding four classrooms, an administrative office and an exterior walkway. Samantha Murphy ’09, Michelle Marquardt ’10, Carlin Rabie ’10 and Justin Abodalo ’12 will travel to Bethlehem, Palestine, in July to participate in a summer program at the Ansar Center, which provides outreach to the Palestinian community through educational workshops and services for local women and children—including athletic programs, English classes and counseling for victims of domestic violence. The students’ goals are to bridge the gap between the cultures of the West and those of the East, and to shed the perception of western bias for one of cultural awareness. The Davis Projects for Peace is offered to undergraduates at American colleges and universities in the Davis United World College Scholars Program to design innovative grassroots projects. The projects judged to be the most promising are funded with $10,000 each. The objective is to encourage and support today’s motivated youth to create ideas for building peace. For more information, visit the Davis Projects for Peace Web site. |

P. Buckley Moss Paintings Available Join Hood on Facebook Ask Tammy I recently visited campus and, while walking around Alumnae Hall, noticed white stones embedded in the foundation that say “Class Ivy” followed by a year. What do these stones mean? An early College tradition was the planting of a sprig of ivy by the graduating class as part of Class Day exercises during commencement week. Those exercises included the delivery of the “Ivy Oration” by a senior honor student, the singing of the “Ivy Song,” and the planting of the class ivy beneath a stone marker. The ivy was not just a symbol of the years spent at Hood, but also a tribute to the class. The foundation of Winchester Hall, the College’s original location, has similar ivy markers. This tradition is not unique to Hood. Schools such as Harvard, Princeton and Penn State are known to have similar ivy traditions. |

Katie Vu, Jen Graham (above) and Brandy Noel all had multi-goal games against Ferrum. Sophomore Kelsey Blackwell scored three goals and assisted on two others against Shenandoah Monday, making her the program’s single-season scoring leader. She now has 52 points, breaking the record of 47 previously held by Cheryl Banks from 2005. Blackwell needs three scores Tuesday against Stevenson University to tie the single season record for goals (36). Hood has never beaten Stevenson in seven previous meetings.
Men's Lacrosse (1-13, 0-7 CAC) Last Week This Week Hood wrapped up its 2009 season last week against a pair of Capital Athletic Conference rivals. Troy Hubbard (above) notched his team-leading 19th goal of the spring late in the second quarter against St. Mary's College (Md.). Dominique Shorter tallied his 11th score with 4:08 to play in the third period. Hood and Wesley will square off for the second straight year in the first round of the playoffs. These two teams met in Frederick last year, but the Wolverines came away with the win, 6-2. Hood is seeking its first-ever CAC playoff win. ![]() Women's Tennis (9-9, 2-3 CAC) Last Week This Week Hood evened its record at 9-9 on the season with a lopsided nonconference win over Penn State University-Abington Wednesday.
