Alumnae and alumni, faculty and staff, special guests and local dignitaries will be on hand in the Hodson Outdoor Theater Monday, Aug. 25 to mark the official beginning of the 2008-09 academic year with returning undergraduates, as well as graduate students and new first-year and transfer students. Alumnae Bequeath Gifts to the College
Mildred Binder ’40 bequeathed more than $544,000 to establish scholarships for students in her name and in the memory of her sister, Muriel Binder ’33; and Doris Lissaman ’53 willed $70,000 to support the Virginia E. Lewis Endowed Chair in Political Science, the James B. Ranck Fund and the College’s Annual Funds. To find out more about the gifts, read the full news story.
Outdoor Classroom Added to Campus Landscape
An outdoor classroom, a gift from the Class of 2007, was added in front of Rosenstock Hall this summer. The classroom and other campus upgrades were made possible by alumnae and alumni, and community donors. Read about other renovations made this summer.
Alumna Authors Fourth Book
Margaret Marshall Coleman ’77 authored her fourth book, titled “Mama Wears Two Aprons,” about women who took on the new roles of helping their family farms prosper during the Great Depression. Her book is scheduled to be published this month. Read the news story about Margaret’s publication.
Alumnae Named to New Positions
Kelly Huegel ’96 was named associate director of internal communications for KPMG’s mid-Atlantic area.
Donna Owens ’80 is a city administrator in Niagara Falls (N.Y.). She is the first woman to hold this position.

Alumna Continues Work With Aid for Africa
Barbara Rose ’73, currently executive director of Aid for Africa, has been involved with the issues facing Africa her entire professional career. She was the founding executive director of Future Harvest, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building awareness of the importance of science for food production, the environment and the world poor; and directed the communications department of the International Food Policy Research Institute, an organization focused on improving food and nutrition through better policies for food production and distribution.
Hood Student Helps Family on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"
Jamie Bingaman ’12 volunteered to work on a home for a mother of 14 in Poolesville, Md., for ABC’s TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” The makeover will be featured on the show’s two-hour season premiere this fall. Read the news story about Jamie’s experience.
Change for "Messiah" Performances
The Hood Choir will present the 61st annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah” Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22 and 23. This year, due to scheduling and logistical difficulties with the U.S. Naval Academy, the choirs from Mount St. Mary’s University, as well as members of the larger Hood and local communities, soloists and a professional orchestra will join the Hood Choir to perform Handel’s majestic oratorio. In 1868 Louisa May Alcott wrote her classic work “Little Women” at Orchard House, which is also the setting of the novel, inspiring guests to comment that “a visit to Orchard House is like walking through the book!” As an additional treat, guest will have the opportunity to view and purchase Kristina’s artwork. Graduate School Art Exhibitions
Artwork by Victoria Clayton and Leslee Cramer Forster ’92 will be on display in the Hodson Gallery in the Tatem Arts Center until Sunday, Aug. 24. Victoria’s exhibit, “Images of the Spirit,” displays sculpted, press-molded and wheel-thrown ceramic tiles and altar ware. Leslee’s work is of hand-built sculpture busts and three-dimensional sculptural relief images in an exhibit titled “Life Altered.” For more information about the exhibits, please contact Youngmi Organ, curator of the Hodson Gallery, at (301) 696-3471. The Gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Ceramics and Painting Workshops Offered
A series of hands-on ceramics and studio art workshops will be offered at Hood during the fall semester.
The Art of Handbuilding will be held Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. from Sept. 9 to Oct. 14, with open studio sessions from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays. The fee for the six-week class is $170.
A beginning and an intermediate wheel class will be held each Thursday from Sept. 11 to Oct. 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with open studio sessions from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays. The fee for the workshop is $170.
A supervised studio wheel workshop will be offered on Fridays from Sept. 12 to Oct. 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The fee for the six-week course is $120.
A watercolor course will be offered each Tuesday from Sept. 30 to Oct. 28 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The fee for the workshop is $115.

Graduate School Information Sessions
Thinking about graduate school? The career center will host an information session Tuesday, Sept. 16 from noon to 2 p.m. in the multicultural suite on the second floor of the Whitaker Campus Center, to provide a general overview for those considering post-graduate options.
A panel discussion on the specifics of what to consider in selecting and applying to graduate school will also be offered by the Career Center Thursday, Sept. 18 from 6:45 to 8 p.m. in Whitaker Campus Center Commons.
