"Field of Dreams" Nearing Completion
While students have been away for the summer, the campus has been abuzz preparing for their return. Along with renovations made to Whitaker Campus Center and residence halls, the installation of the new state-of-the-art FieldTurf® field, scoreboard, locker room facilities and athletic complex entrance is nearing completion.
Join the Hood community Tuesday, Sept. 1 when the first game will be played on the new surface, as the Blazers field hockey team plays Salisbury University at 5 p.m. President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., will attempt the ceremonial first goal prior to the game using the original hockey stick of Hood’s first president, Joseph Henry Apple LL.D., Ped.D.

Join Us for Opening Convocation
Alumnae and alumni, faculty and staff, special guests and local dignitaries will be on hand in the Hodson Outdoor Theater Monday, Aug. 24 to mark the official beginning of the 2009-10 academic year with returning undergraduates, as well as graduate students and new first-year and transfer students. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Linda Scott, Ph.D., professor of psychology, will give the convocation address. Please join us!
A Class of 1981 Get-Together
A few members of the Class of 1981 recently gathered for a small get-together at Danielle’s restaurant in downtown Frederick. Alumna Sells Cookbooks for Noteworthy Cause
Inspired to raise money to help feed poor Israelis after her visit to the Carmei Ha’ir Soup Kitchen in Jerusalem, Joanne Schene Caras ’79 compiled 129 stories from Holocaust survivors around the world and more than 200 family recipes to create a Holocaust Survivor Cookbook. With 100 percent of the proceeds from each book sold given to the Carmei Ha’ir Soup Kitchen, Joanne has raised more than $70,000 for the soup kitchen and more than $200,000 for charities that have sold the cookbook as a fund-raiser. Biology Professor Awarded Prestigious NIH Research Grant
Ricky Hirschhorn, Ph.D., professor of biology, was recently awarded a prestigious three-year National Institutes of Health research grant worth more than $230,000 to continue her study of Huntington’s Disease. NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award grants support research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences by faculty and students in health professional schools and in other institutions that are not major NIH research grant fund recipients. The program also seeks to strengthen the College’s research environment and provide opportunities for students to participate in research experiences. Management Programs Are Candidates for Accreditation
Hood’s management programs recently applied and have been accepted as candidates for accreditation by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. The ACBSP stresses improving students’ educational experience through enhanced learning outcomes, teaching excellence and effective services. The accreditation will reinforce Hood’s commitment to offering quality graduate and undergraduate business management programs that focus on continuous improvement, innovation and scholarship. Nominations for the 2009 Hood College Athletic Hall of Fame will be accepted until Aug. 15, 2009. New Linked-to-Work Database System
On Aug. 24, the career center will introduce a new database system, Linked-to-Work. Hood students and alumni can utilize Linked-to-Work to search for internships, and part- and full-time jobs.
