A Holiday Message from the President We are most grateful for the support we continue to receive from so many alumnae, alumni, friends and parents. Recognizing the difficult economic times facing so many of us, I am confident Hood College will endure these challenges with the tenacity and assistance of our loyal supporters. I have assured the parents of our current students that we will continue to work with them to help finance their education at Hood. I want to thank you for your support and investments in Hood College. May you and your loved ones find peace and happiness throughout this holiday season. Lin, Stephanie and I wish you all the best during this very special time of year. Warmest regards, |

Fischer Becomes First Women's Soccer Player Tabbed All-CAC Congratulations to Jennifer Fischer '12, a native of Montgomery Village, Md., and product of Gaithersburg High School, who was Hood's first women's soccer player to be named to a Capital Athletic Conference all-star team, with her selection to the 2008 all-league second team. Fischer was instrumental in the Blazers 2008 campaign. The team finished with a 10-8-2 overall record and became the first women's program at Hood to win a CAC playoff game. Hood, the sixth seed in the tournament, upset third-seeded Stevenson University 3-1 on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.
Women's Basketball (2-6, 0-2 CAC) After a rough beginning to the 2008-09 season, Hood recorded back-to-back victories for the first time since the 2005-06 season by defeating Trinity University (D.C.), 68-57, and Wilson College, 88-31, just six days apart. Junior forward Jen Willison (right) broke the program's single-game scoring record with a 39-point performance against the Phoenix, and followed that up with her 18th career double-double on game-highs of 30 points and 18 rebounds against the Tigers. Willison, who was named the Capital Athletic Conference athlete of the week Dec. 1, became the first women's basketball player to register consecutive 30-point scoring efforts. Senior Sara Wastler had a solid all-around day versus the Phoenix, registering 14 points, 12 rebounds and a school-record 13 assists. Wastler became the first Blazer women's basketball player to notch a triple-double since Melissa Kelly '00 accomplished the feat against Christendom College Feb. 26, 1999. Hood's next game is Saturday, Dec. 20, against Goucher College. The Blazers and Gophers tip off at 2 p.m. from Gambrill Gymnasium.
Men's Basketball (3-4, 0-2 CAC) One of the highlights of Hood's 2008-09 campaign came in the second week of the season when the Blazers captured the Rinso Marquette Tournament championship hosted by Lebanon Valley College. Senior guards Ryan Junghans and Tim Abercrombie (right) were named to the all-tournament team for their outstanding play. Additionally, Junghans was selected as the Capital Athletic Conference athlete of the week. Hood got off to a rocky start in CAC action dropping a pair of league contests to York College (Pa.) and the University of Mary Washington. Hood is idle until Dec. 29 when the Blazers travel to Hampden-Sydney College for a two-day tournament. The Blazers battle John Carroll University in the opening round at 7 p.m.
Women's Swimming (1-4, 0-3 CAC) The Blazers traveled to Arlington, Va., for their final dual meet of the calendar year against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Marymount University in mid-November. Senior Michelle Leggieri won the 100 free (59.92) and touched the wall second in the 50 free (27.64) while junior Erica Hamor (right) placed second in both the 200 free (2:11.49) and the 200 fly (2:37.98). Hood also took fifth of seven teams at the two-day Randolph-Macon Invitational. Hood is idle until Saturday, Jan. 10, when it hosts Frostburg State University and CAC rival Salisbury University in the first of three straight home meets at 2 p.m. ![]() Men's Swimming (0-4, 0-3 CAC) In Hood's final dual meet of the calendar year against Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount University, freshman Chris Nemecek won the 200 free (1:52.78) touching the wall just 0.58 seconds off the school record. Junior Chris Moreland tied for first in the 50 free (24.01) with Marymount's Ryan Kilmon while senior captain Matt Haynes (right) was second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.30). Hood also turned in some solid times at the Randolph-Macon Invitational in late November. Nemecek lowered his school record in the 100 fly by 0.02 seconds (55.69). Hood is idle until Saturday, Jan. 10, when it hosts Frostburg State University and CAC rival Salisbury University in the first of three straight home meets at 2 p.m. Click here if you would like to sign up to receive the Hood College Weekly Athletics Update. |
