Hood Highlights

Our Sympathy to the Family and Friends of Lori A. Shipley '97, P '09
It is with deep regret to inform you that Lori A. Shipley '97, P '09, chair of the Hood College Board of Associates, was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on Route I-70 in Washington County, Maryland, Jan. 19. Lori, 50, joined the board of associates in 1999 and was elected chair in 2007. She was director of human resources for The Plamondon Companies in Frederick. Her daughter, Karen Shipley Leggett C '07, M.A. '09, earned a master's degree from Hood earlier this month.

“Lori’s enthusiasm, energy and passion for Hood will be deeply missed,” said President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D. “She was an inspiration to so many of us and we are all better off for having known and worked with her.”

Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 23 at Calvary United Methodist Church, located at 133 W. 2nd St., Frederick, MD 21701, from 2 to 4 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will also be held at Calvary United Methodist Church Saturday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.

Our sympathy is extended to Lori's family, friends, and colleagues.

Mark Gaver Named Chair of Board of Trustees
Mark Gaver, president and CEO of GTI Federal, was recently named Hood’s chair of the board of trustees, replacing Martha Church, Ph.D., L.L.D. ’95 and president emerita, who has served as Hood’s board chair for the past two-and-a-half years. Mark, the current chair of the board of trustees’ facilities committee, was a member of Hood’s board of associates. For more information about Mark’s appointment, read the full news story.

Hood College Day at Brewer's Alley
Dine anytime on Tuesday, March 3 at Brewer's Alley and 20 percent of the proceeds will go toward Hood’s Annual Funds. Brewer's Alley Restaurant and Brewery is located at 124 N. Market St., in Frederick. Thank you to Phil Bowers ’83, president and brew master, for his generous and continued support. Have a meal at Brewer’s Alley and support Hood! Visit Hood's Web page for additional information on Annual Funds.

Thanks You Hood College Club of Philadelphia
Hood College and the Office of Alumnae and Alumni Relations would like to thank the Hood Club of Philadelphia for once again awarding their annual spring scholarship for Philadelphia-native students to purchase academic materials from Hood’s bookstore. Your continued support is greatly appreciated!

Hood Service Association Helps Tucson Students
The Hood Service Association recently adopted a class at Keeling Elementary School in Tucson, Ariz., in an effort to encourage young students to attend college. Members of the association sent the students Hood paraphernalia and frequently communicate with them via e-mail to share the importance of a college education. Erica Royer ’10 was the coordinator of this project and Stephen Bearman ’09 is the president of the Hood Service Association.

Spring Phonathon Begins Next Month
Despite what the calendar, and the thermometers may indicate, spring is just around the corner for the annual funds. Student callers kick off the spring phonathon in February, following a successful fall of fund-raising calls to alumnae, alumni and parents. Remember, your gift to the annual funds provides the steadfast support that allows Hood to thrive regardless of the economic climate. Make your gift online using VISA, MasterCard or Discover or call the Office of Institutional Advancement at (301) 696-3700.

Supporting Summer Faculty Research
You are invited to support an endeavor that strengthens the very heart of Hood College—its faculty—through a competitive, well-respected program that awards grants to faculty for professional development, research and curriculum development during the summer. Each year, the Hood College Board of Associates reviews proposals and awards grant monies but the requests for support are greater than the funds available. Your gift will make a difference. You may make a gift to professional development or to the McCardell Professional Development Endowed Fund. Last year, for example, Donna Bertazzoni, professor of journalism, and Janis Judson, associate professor of political science, revised their curriculum for their Censorship in America course following extensive study of “Censorship in the Age of YouTube.” Jennifer Ross, associate professor of art and archaeology, worked at an archaeological dig in Turkey where, in previous years, she has taken Hood students; and Griselda Zuffi, associate professor of Spanish, researched the life stories of political prisoners, incorporating her findings into classroom teaching. For further information on how you can support this program, contact Joy Derr, director of development communications at Hood, or call (301) 696-3703.
