Alumnae, alumni and guests celebrate Reunion Weekend 2009
Nearly 500 alumnae and alumni—ranging from the Class of 1934 to the Class of 2004—families and guests returned to campus June 5-7 for Reunion Weekend 2009. The events began with a welcome buffet lunch and reunion college sessions led by Joy Derr, M.A. ’93, C ’03, director of development communications; Drew Ferrier, Ph.D., professor of biology and director of the environmental biology program; and Charlie Daneri of Frederick Cellars Winery. Despite rain showers, alums also enjoyed campus tours; a Pergola Society reception, as well as the 1893 reception for the Class of 1959 and all alums who have previously celebrated their 50th reunions; and an all-class dinner and party.
Ambitious alums rose early Saturday for a two-mile run/walk with President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., and attended the “Coffee with the President” session later that morning to hear President Volpe’s update on the College. The Class of 1959 paraded into Coblentz Dining Room to begin the traditional Alumnae and Alumni Luncheon, where six members of their class were honored with Distinguished Alumna awards for their dedicated leadership, commitment and service to Hood’s board of trustees. The award recipients are: Carol Lumb Allen, Marty Shortiss Allen, Gayle Hamilton Blakeslee, Janet Hobbs Cotton, Edee Howard Hogan and Nancy Rogers Huntsinger. (Pictured above are Marty Shortiss Allen, Edee Howard Hogan and Nancy Rogers Huntsinger at the Pergola Society reception held Friday evening.)
Following the luncheon were class photos; tours of downtown Frederick; the inaugural Graduate School alumni reception; reunion dinners; and an all-class jazz party.
The weekend concluded with the traditional strawberry breakfast and a chapel service, led by the Class of 1959.

In addition, the faculty development committee recommended, and the College awarded, Summer Science Research Institute grants to 11 faculty members and 17 students; while the Board of Associates McCardell Professional Development Grants committee, working in conjunction with the faculty development committee, awarded works cited grants to five faculty members. Department of History and Political Science Becomes Two Entities
When students return to campus this fall, and alums come back to visit, they will find an additional department on campus. Effective May 2009, the department of history and political science became two entities, each forming its own department. The history department, chaired by Emilie Amt, Ph.D., professor of history, will boast three new courses in the fall and several events have been scheduled for the academic year—including a book sale to raise funds for student academic awards that will be co-sponsored by the political science department, chaired by Janis Judson, Ph.D., associate professor of political science; lectures; and a reading and book signing.
“We are excited about being a separate department,” said Professor Amt. “We believe it will let us do more to meet our students’ needs and interests.”
For more information about the history department, contact Professor Amt, call (301) 696-3696 or join the Hood College History Department group on Facebook. For more information about the political science department, contact Professor Judson or call (301) 696-3721.
