The Class of 2009 Reaches Another Milestone

Maryland Independent Higher Education Day
Hood students joined President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., in Annapolis, Md., Feb. 7 for Maryland Independent Higher Education Day. Each year, students and administrators from member institutions of the Maryland Independent College and University Association visit Annapolis to meet and thank legislators, and to ask them for their continued support of the state’s private colleges and universities. Receptions in Arizona
On Feb. 9, Tucson-area alumnae and friends gathered at a luncheon to talk with President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., and to hear updates about the College. The Tucson-area alums have been hosting this event for more than 10 years. This year’s attendees were (pictured, left to right): Ellen Perry Croll ’60, Nancy Reed Hummel ’51, Peg Jacob Jones ’58, Elly Clark Robbins ’58, President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., Nancy Amelia Newcomer ’66, Lee Kincaid, and Jackie Kincaid Brehm ’81. A cocktail reception for Phoenix-area alums was held the night before.
Renowned Commentator to Speak at Frederick Reads Event
Cokie Roberts, a nationally renowned political commentator, is the featured speaker at the third annual Frederick Reads event Thursday, April 10 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall. Roberts will focus on her latest book, “Ladies of Liberty,” which explores the lives of some of the remarkable women who worked behind the scenes in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War. Hood History Museum Docents
Are you interested in volunteering several hours a month as a guide for the Hood College History Museum? A workshop for volunteer docents will be held Tuesday, March 18 at 11 a.m. in the Beneficial-Hodson Library and Technology Center, followed by lunch at noon. Throughout the years, alumnae, alumni, faculty, staff and friends have given historic memorabilia to the College. Many of these items are now on display in the museum: the desk of Hood’s first president, Joseph Henry Apple; books and catalogs of The Woman’s College of Frederick; historic documents and papers; jewelry; gym suits and blazers; and even President Apple’s field hockey stick. Currently the museum is open by appointment only but, with trained volunteers, it can be open on a regular basis. If you can participate in

Alumna Earns Publishing Deal Tina Wells ’02 recently signed a publishing contract with HarperCollins Children’s Books for her new tween fiction series about the adventures of Mackenzie Blue, a charismatic and fashionable girl who tries to survive the teenage years.
Graduate Alumnus Earns Promotion
Timothy Hodges M.A. ’94 was recently promoted from lieutenant to lieutenant commander while serving at Fort Sheridan in Highwood, Ill.

Marketing and Communications Department Wins Five ADDY Awards
Hood's marketing and communications department took home five ADDY awards from the Greater Frederick Advertising Federation’s annual awards reception March 1. Campus events posters designed by Adam Leviton, senior graphic designer, earned two silver and one gold award; the Humanities Colloquium events poster series, also designed by Adam with assistance from student workers, earned a gold award; and "The Hood Equation", a local television commercial produced in conjunction with Cerebral Lounge, received a gold award. These awards recognize local excellence in advertising. The local winners may proceed to the district competition and those winners may compete at the national level. |

Social Visionary Speaker Series
Hood will host an educational panel on the topic of domestic violence and the impact it has on the community as part of its Social Visionary Speaker Series Thursday, April 3 at 6 p.m. in the Whitaker Campus Center Commons. Among the panel of experts will be Barbara Martin, CEO of Heartly House, Inc., of Frederick; Teresa Bean, chief of the Domestic Violence Unit for the State’s Attorney’s Office; and Colleen Moore, program coordinator for the Family Violence Response Program at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. Chinese Yixing Teapots on Display An exhibit of teapots from a region in China known worldwide for its clay will be on display in Hood’s Beneficial-Hodson Library and Technology Center lobby until Sunday, March 16. Read the full story

Ceramics and Painting Workshops Offered
A series of hands-on ceramics and studio art workshops will be offered at Hood this month. For additional information on the series contact Joyce Michaud, associate professor of art and director of the graduate ceramic arts program, or call (301) 696-3456.
A watercolor class will be held each Tuesday from March 11 to April 15 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The fee for the workshop is $140.
The Art of Handbuilding will be held Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. from March 18 to April 22, with open studio sessions from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays. The fee for the six-week class is $170.
Beginning and Intermediate Wheel will be held each Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. from March 20 to May 1, with open studio sessions from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays. There is a $170 fee for the six-session class.
Annual Easter Egg Hunt The Hood College Student Government Association will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt Sunday, March 16 at 1 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Outdoor Theatre. The event is free and open to all children who are accompanied by a parent or guardian. For more information and additional activities, read the full story.
Irish Pianist Gives Lecture and Presents Concert Una Hunt, one of Ireland’s leading pianists, will present a piano concert of music by Irish composers and other Irish-themed music Monday, March 17 at 8 p.m. in Hood’s Brodbeck Music Hall. The St. Patrick’s Day concert will be preceded by a brief lecture by Una on Irish piano music of the 19th century. Both the lecture and performance are free and no tickets are required. Annual Juried Student Exhibition
The annual juried student exhibit, which features artwork in a variety of media, will
be on display from Monday, March 24 to Monday, April 14. The opening reception and an awards presentation will be held Wednesday, March 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson

Faculty Music Recital Wayne L. Wold, associate professor of music and College organist, will present his annual recital on Hood’s Coblentz Memorial Organ Sunday, March 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Hood’s Coffman Chapel. Alumna Returns to Speak on Cult of Demeter Jennifer Palinkas ’96, who earned a master’s degree in ancient art at SUNY-Buffalo and who is completing her doctoral degree in Greek art and archaeology at Emory University, will lecture on the cult of Demeter Thursday, April, 3 at 7 p.m. in Hood’s Marx Center. Hood College Theatre Presents Spring Production
Hood College Theatre’s spring production of “Six Characters in Search of An Author” will be performed from 8 to 10 p.m. from Thursday, April 10 through Saturday, April 12; and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 13, in Hood’s Avalon Performing Arts Studio in Tatem Arts Center. Tickets for the production, which will be available at the door beginning 90 minutes prior to each performance, are $8 for general admission and $5 for students and Hood faculty and staff. Tickets for Hood students are free. The Avalon Performing Arts Studio is not handicapped accessible. Gazing At the Stars
Hood is offering everyone the chance to get up close and personal with the stars. The Williams Observatory will be open free of charge from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. each Wednesday until April 30 for the exclusive use of the observatory and portable telescopes. Brandy Noel notched a hat trick and Kelsey Blackwell scored the first two goals of her Blazer career Wednesday at St. Mary's College (Md.). Then Sunday, Noel, Jen Graham (above) and Sarah Balukoff ripped single tallies in a nonconference tilt with Chesnut Hill College. Goalkeeper Lauren Lieb became Hood's all-time saves leader Sunday. She has racked up 340 saves in her four-year career, breaking the record previously held by Stephanie Andrews '99 (335). Hood's lone contest of the week pits the Blazers against the York College (Pa.) Spartans Tuesday in a Capital Athletic Conference contest at 4 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.

The Blazers traveled to Salisbury University Wednesday to take on the defending national champion Sea Gulls. Jason Anderson, Dominique Shorter (above), Alex Tkacz and Sofiane Lazar all scored for Hood. Then Saturday the Blazers squared off with Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. Hood reeled off five of the game's first six goals but could not hold on down the stretch, falling 12-8. Will Oconis netted a hat trick as the Blazers registered a season-high eight scores. Hood hosts three home games this week against Washington & Lee University, Virginia Wesleyan College and Marymount University.

Freshman Ola Komolafe (above) won the 400 meter dash in 52.5 seconds at the Salisbury University Opener Saturday. He was also fifth in the 200 meters and was part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads. William Andrews took fifth in the 5000 meters in the fifth-fastest time in program history (17:18.50). Brendan Greenlees lowered his personal record in the 1500 by 21 seconds (4:39.50) and shaved 32 seconds off his 5000 meter time (17:24.10). The Blazers' next competition is slated for Wednesday March 19 at York College (Pa.).

Erica Hamor won the women's javelin and placed sixth in the hammer throw as the Blazers opened the outdoor season at Salisbury University Saturday. Danielle Sgro took second in the 5000 meters while Katie Thomas (above) was third in both the 100 meters and the 100 meter hurdles. Additionally, freshman Kayla Murphy set a school record in the shot put with a toss of 24' 5 1/4". The Blazers' next competition is slated for Wednesday March 19 at York College (Pa.).
