The Hood Community Celebrates its 112th Commencement exercises Robert N. Funk, Ph.D., provost and dean of the faculty, presented bachelor’s degrees to 348 undergraduates during a ceremony held at 10 a.m. on the residential quadrangle. Stefanie Sanford, Ph.D., the deputy advocacy director for national initiatives for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, delivered the undergraduate commencement address. President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., presented an honorary doctor of humane letters degree to Sanford and recognized Courtney Carter, Ph.D., professor of English, and Betsy Estilow, professor of biology, who will be retiring this year. Kathleen Bands, Ph.D., vice president for undergraduate and graduate enrollment management, presented 199 students with master’s degrees during the graduate commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. Cheryl Parrott, M.A. ’06, director of communications for the National Cancer Institute-Frederick, delivered the commencement address. President Volpe also presented Ms. Parrott with an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. |

Outstanding Graduate School Recipients The recipient of this year’s Graduate School Teaching Excellence Award was Xinlian Liu, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science and director of the graduate program in information technology. The 2009 Graduate School Teaching Excellence Award for Adjunct Faculty was awarded to Shari Ostrow-Scher, a lecturer in the education department. R.S.V.P. for Events Reunion Weekend Golf Outing Reunion College Sessions 12:15-1:30 p.m., Beneficial-Hodson Library, Room 2007: In her presentation, “Women Who Paved the Way,” Joy Derr, M.A. ’93, C ’03, director of development communications, will explore the lives of two prominent women with ties to Hood and Frederick—Helen L. Smith, D.F.A. ’89 and Claire McCardell ’27—and their influence on the College and the nation. 1:45-2:45 p.m., Hodson Science Center, Room 131: Drew Ferrier, Ph.D., professor of biology and director of the master of science program in environmental biology, will provide a framework for understanding and appreciating the coastal environment—not only in biological and ecological terms, but also in historical and cultural context—in his presentation “Experiencing Coastal Environments: Hood’s Coastal Studies Program.” 3-4 p.m., Hodson Science Center, Room 131: Charlie Daneri and Emily Williams of Frederick Cellars Winery will talk about the journey grapes take in their presentation, “Wines Journey: From the Vineyard to the Glass.” Best yet, you’ll have a chance to sample the final product. Frederick Cellars, located in downtown Frederick, specializes in discovering Maryland wines and local vineyards. Athletic Department Honors 41 Seniors at Annual Banquet Katherine Law and Jeff Willison (pictured to the left with Tom Dickman, associate director of athletics and head men's basketball coach) for the Coach's Award, given to a female and male student-athlete who personifies the philosophies of being a Division III student-athlete and the Hood College athletic motto of mind, body and spirit; Jamie Gardner and Matt Haynes for the Dean's Award, given to a female and male student-athlete who embodies all of the desirable characteristics of a good teammate and friend; Crystal Parker (pictured to the right with Staci Brennan, assistant director of athletics and head field hockey coach) for the Kim Servedio Award, given in honor of a former women’s soccer player who passed away tragically in 1998. The award is given to a student-athlete who best embodies Kim’s characteristics of sincerity, selflessness and optimism; Ashley Garyn and Tomilayo Komolafe for the President's Award, given to a female and male student-athlete who has given outstanding service to his or her team, the athletic department, the Hood College community and the student body; Danielle Sgro (pictured to the left with Jay Butler, assistant director of athletics for academic enrichment and head women's basketball coach) for the Scholar-Athlete Award, given to a student-athlete who maintains outstanding academic achievement, demonstrates team and campus leadership and embodies the Division III philosophy; Liz Rakowski and Garrett Loomer for the Trustees' Award, given to a female and male student-athlete who has shown outstanding leadership to the team, athletic department and the Hood College Community; and Jessica Parrish and Tim Abercrombie (pictured to the right with Gib Romaine, director of athletics) for the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award, given to a female and male student who has demonstrated exemplary athletic prowess throughout his or her career at Hood.
