The Hood Community Celebrates its 112th Commencement exercises
Hood once again graduated a record number of students in its 112-year history in two Commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 16.

Robert N. Funk, Ph.D., provost and dean of the faculty, presented bachelor’s degrees to 348 undergraduates during a ceremony held at 10 a.m. on the residential quadrangle. Stefanie Sanford, Ph.D., the deputy advocacy director for national initiatives for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, delivered the undergraduate commencement address. President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., presented an honorary doctor of humane letters degree to Sanford and recognized Courtney Carter, Ph.D., professor of English, and Betsy Estilow, professor of biology, who will be retiring this year.

Kathleen Bands, Ph.D., vice president for undergraduate and graduate enrollment management, presented 199 students with master’s degrees during the graduate commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. Cheryl Parrott, M.A. ’06, director of communications for the National Cancer Institute-Frederick, delivered the commencement address. President Volpe also presented Ms. Parrott with an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

Reunion 2009 is Right Around the Corner
Don’t miss the chance to reconnect and reunite with classmates at Reunion Weekend, June 5-7. Please join the classes of 1929, 1934, 1939, 1944, 1947, 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2004 for this year’s reunion. Outstanding Graduate School Recipients
Each year, the Graduate School recognizes an outstanding graduate student from each program and presents teaching excellence awards to a full-time and adjunct faculty member who exemplify the Hood principles of Hope, Opportunity, Obligation and Democracy. A ceremony recognizing Outstanding Graduate Student Award recipients was held Wednesday, May 13. This year’s recipients are: Royster Lawrence, master of business administration; Lynn Cross, master of science in biomedical science; Gary Corsar, master of science in computer and information science; Edward Chwalik, master of science in computer science; Monica Grant Kellner, master of science in curriculum and instruction; Brooke Reinsfelder, master of science in educational leadership; Mary Evelyn McGuigan, master of arts in human sciences; Valerie Whye, master of arts in thanatology; Yasmin Kronfli, master of arts in humanities; Antoinette Border, master of science in mathematics education; and Lauren Secrist, master of science in reading specialization.

The recipient of this year’s Graduate School Teaching Excellence Award was Xinlian Liu, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science and director of the graduate program in information technology. The 2009 Graduate School Teaching Excellence Award for Adjunct Faculty was awarded to Shari Ostrow-Scher, a lecturer in the education department.

New Hood Appointments
Congratulations to Kathleen Bands, Ph.D., who was recently appointed vice president for undergraduate and graduate enrollment management, and Allen Flora, Ph.D., professor of physics, who has been appointed interim dean of the Graduate School. Bands had been the dean of the Graduate School since February 2008.

Athletic Hall of Fame
Nominations for the 2009 Hood College Athletic Hall of Fame will be accepted until Aug. 15, 2009. Do you remember an outstanding athlete, coach or administrator who had a positive effect on Hood athletics? Take a moment and nominate them for this prestigious award. Nomination forms and criteria are available on Hood's Web site; or by contacting Adrienne Mullikin, sports information director; or by calling (301) 696-3978. Be a part of a new tradition at Hood College.

Alum Directory
The Office of Alumnae and Alumni Relations is currently working with Harris Connect, a company that specializes in integrated data research, directory and Internet solutions for educational institutions and other organizations, to create an alumnae and alumni print directory. The directory will help alums stay better connected to classmates, friends and Hood. If you have not already been contacted, you may receive a phone call, e-mail or postcard from Harris Connect in the near future. Reunion Weekend Golf Outing
Friday, June 5, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Hollow Creek Golf Club, 50 Glenbrook Drive, Middletown, MD 21769. Join President Ron Volpe and alumnae, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff and friends for a day of golf. The cost is $60 per person, which includes greens and golf cart fees, one hour of range privileges, a continental breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m., and lunch. If you are interested in joining us, please indicate your playing partners, if applicable, when registering. Groups of fewer than four and singles will be combined into foursomes.

Reunion College Sessions
Friday, June 5, 12:15-4 p.m. Join us for one, a few or all of our Reunion College Sessions, led by members of the Hood College and local Frederick communities. The schedule for the sessions is as follows:

12:15-1:30 p.m., Beneficial-Hodson Library, Room 2007: In her presentation, “Women Who Paved the Way,” Joy Derr, M.A. ’93, C ’03, director of development communications, will explore the lives of two prominent women with ties to Hood and Frederick—Helen L. Smith, D.F.A. ’89 and Claire McCardell ’27—and their influence on the College and the nation.

1:45-2:45 p.m., Hodson Science Center, Room 131: Drew Ferrier, Ph.D., professor of biology and director of the master of science program in environmental biology, will provide a framework for understanding and appreciating the coastal environment—not only in biological and ecological terms, but also in historical and cultural context—in his presentation “Experiencing Coastal Environments: Hood’s Coastal Studies Program.”

3-4 p.m., Hodson Science Center, Room 131: Charlie Daneri and Emily Williams of Frederick Cellars Winery will talk about the journey grapes take in their presentation, “Wines Journey: From the Vineyard to the Glass.” Best yet, you’ll have a chance to sample the final product. Frederick Cellars, located in downtown Frederick, specializes in discovering Maryland wines and local vineyards.

Two-mile Campus Fun Run/Walk
Saturday, June 6, 8-9 a.m. Start your day off on the right foot (literally!) and join President Ron Volpe for a two-mile fun run/walk around the beautiful Hood campus! Grab your running attire, lace up your shoes and let us know your shirt size (S, M, L, XL, XXL) when registering. We’ll meet you bright and early at the Pergola.

On Friday, June 5, drop-in hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with scheduled appointments available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop-in hours for Saturday, June 6 will be from 3 to 5 p.m.

Campus Events

Hodson Gallery Pottery Exhibit
Ann-Frazer Brown of Poolesville, Md., will showcase her ceramic sculpture and functional pottery in the Hodson Gallery in Hood’s Tatem Arts Center until Sunday, May 31. Her exhibit, “Of the Earth: The Constancy of Change,” is an expression of her fascination with round, organic forms and alludes to the passage of time. She is one of seven students in Hood’s ceramic arts program who are completing their graduate certificates in ceramic arts and who will be displaying their work in the Hodson Gallery through Aug. 1. Athletic Department Honors 41 Seniors at Annual Banquet
The Hood College Athletic Department paid tribute to its 41 graduating seniors from its 19 varsity teams and one club team Sunday, May 3. Twelve outstanding senior student-athletes were presented with departmental honors in seven categories. The award winners included:

Katherine Law and Jeff Willison (pictured to the left with Tom Dickman, associate director of athletics and head men's basketball coach) for the Coach's Award, given to a female and male student-athlete who personifies the philosophies of being a Division III student-athlete and the Hood College athletic motto of mind, body and spirit;

Jamie Gardner and Matt Haynes for the Dean's Award, given to a female and male student-athlete who embodies all of the desirable characteristics of a good teammate and friend;

Crystal Parker (pictured to the right with Staci Brennan, assistant director of athletics and head field hockey coach) for the Kim Servedio Award, given in honor of a former women’s soccer player who passed away tragically in 1998. The award is given to a student-athlete who best embodies Kim’s characteristics of sincerity, selflessness and optimism;

Ashley Garyn and Tomilayo Komolafe for the President's Award, given to a female and male student-athlete who has given outstanding service to his or her team, the athletic department, the Hood College community and the student body;

Danielle Sgro (pictured to the left with Jay Butler, assistant director of athletics for academic enrichment and head women's basketball coach) for the Scholar-Athlete Award, given to a student-athlete who maintains outstanding academic achievement, demonstrates team and campus leadership and embodies the Division III philosophy;

Liz Rakowski and Garrett Loomer for the Trustees' Award, given to a female and male student-athlete who has shown outstanding leadership to the team, athletic department and the Hood College Community;

and Jessica Parrish and Tim Abercrombie (pictured to the right with Gib Romaine, director of athletics) for the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award, given to a female and male student who has demonstrated exemplary athletic prowess throughout his or her career at Hood.
