Hood Receives Grant from Invitrogen Foundation
Hood recently received $50,000 from the Invitrogen Foundation to establish Hood College Quest: Summer Science Research Institute. The grant will fund six projects and support 11 students and six faculty members in their research during the eight-week summer program. Alumna Recognized by President Bush
Ellen Cullen Yodzis Patton ’82 received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in a ceremony on the south lawn of the White House Tuesday, May 6. President George W. Bush presented the award in honor of Military Spouses Appreciation Day, which was initiated by President Reagan in 1984 and recognized each year on the Friday prior to Mother’s Day. President Bush awarded one spouse from each service, the Coast Guard and the National Guard—a total of six—for their volunteer work. Ellen’s husband, Capt. Mark Patton, is a commanding officer at the naval base in Point Loma, Calif., and her son, Erik, is a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Alumna Awarded Fulbright Grant
Shannon Williams ’07 recently became one of at least eight Hood alumnae to be awarded a prestigious Fulbright Grant. Students Recognized as Tischer Scholars
A reception was held April 18 for students who presented the results of their yearlong departmental honors research projects. Senior undergraduates, selected by department faculty, engage in scholarly research that provides excellent preparation for careers and graduate work. Upon successful completion of their yearlong research, the students are named Christine P. Tischer Scholars. This year’s Tischer scholars—all members of the Class of 2008—are: April Penn, Daniel Murray, Elizabeth Lipke, Arielle John, Mary Hughes, Matthew Harris, Jamie Bussey, Stephanie Garrett, Tegan Rice, Sarah Gilmour, Lindsey Nagy, Laura Brown, Abigail Brackins, Irena Antic, Elizabeth Aghjayan, Vanya Slavchevska and Marigny Goodwin Rusk.
A special thank you is extended to Christine Plankenhorn Tischer ’65, a former member of the board of trustees, and her husband Joseph, who help fund the program; and to Anne Derbes, professor of art and archaeology, and Hoda Zaki, Ph.D., professor of political science, who co-direct the program.
Hood Professor Publishes Book
A book launch and reception were held for Paige Eager, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science, for the recent publication of her book, “From Freedom Fighters to Terrorists: Women and Political Violence.” Paige’s book, published by Ashgate, is a collection of 15 case studies that examine women’s roles in political violence and terrorism as leaders, operatives and passive supporters throughout the 20th century.
Faculty and Staff Recognized at Honors Convocation
Members of Hood’s faculty and staff were recognized at this year’s Honors Convocation April 22. Congratulations to the following faculty and staff members: Thomas Bogar, Ph.D., assistant professor of education, who received the Adviser of the Year Award; Yvette Webster, coordinator of the Service Learning and Bonner Scholars Program, who received the Mortar Board Rose Award; Anne Derbes, professor of art and archaeology and co-director of the Honors Program, who received the Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award; Nancy Hoffman Hennessey ’83, director of career services and service learning, who received the Provost’s Staff Mentor Award; Joy Reese Derr, M.A. ’93, C’03, director of development communications, who received the Martha E. Church Prize; and David Hein, Ph.D., professor of religion and philosophy, who received the Dr. Henry P. and Page Laughlin Faculty Professional Achievement Award.
Robotics Team Wins Competition
Congratulations to Hood’s Computer Science Robotics team who recently won the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers/National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Robotics Simulation Competition. The team won for the best robot navigation and docking, and was invited to demonstrate their work at the 2008 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation held this month in Pasadena, Calif. Team members include Michy Maynard ’08, George Henson ’09 and Brandon Burger ’09. The team’s coaches are George Dimitoglou, assistant professor of computer science, and Xinlian Liu, assistant professor of computer science and director of the graduate program in computer and information sciences. Alumnae Appointed to New Positions
Deborah Eaton Thackston ’79 will become the new principal at Spring Ridge Elementary School in Frederick. She was previously the assistant principal at Brunswick Elementary School in Brunswick, Md.
The St. Mary’s County Board of Education announced the appointment of Carol Antonaccio Klenk ’89 to the position of 11-month school psychologist in the Department of Pupil Services.
Alumna Writes Series for USA Today
Edith Howard Hogan ’59, P’86, a registered dietitian in private practice in Washington, D.C., and a culinary expert with the American Dietetic Association, writes a series each week for USA TODAY on weight-loss strategies and advice for eating healthier. For more information, read Edith's column.
