61st Anniversary Performances of Handel’s “Messiah”
The Hood College Choir, along with the choir from Mount St. Mary’s University, members of the local community, soloists and a professional orchestra, will perform Handel’s “Messiah” in Hood’s Coffman Chapel Saturday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. Doors will open one hour before each one-hour-and-forty-minute performance. Hood Says "Thanks" for Giving
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Hood College extends a warm and heartfelt “thank you” to the thousands of benefactors listed in the 2007-2008 Hood College Honor Roll of Donors. Watch for your issue of the Honor Roll to arrive in your mailbox next week.

The 2008-2009 fund-raising year has begun. Please take a moment to build on Hood’s success with a gift to the Annual Funds in an amount that is meaningful to you. Visit the annual giving Web page to make your gift online. Remember, your gift made before Dec. 31 can provide tax benefits for you on your 2008 return.

Your Phones May Be Ringing
The fall Phonathon will run until Thursday, Nov. 13! Students will be calling alums and parents to ask for support of Hood’s Annual Funds. Last year, Phonathon callers raised nearly $400,000 in gifts and pledges for Hood, directly benefiting students and faculty! Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
Hood formally celebrated the inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame induction Saturday, Nov. 1. More than 150 alumnae, alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff attended the reception. Inductees traveled from such distant places as South Africa, Wisconsin, Maine, Massachusetts and Colorado. President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., and Gib Romaine, athletic director, inducted 11 White Blazer Girls and eight individuals at this historic event. Student and Donors Scholarship Reception
Current students as well as past and present donors were recognized at a scholarship reception Sunday, Nov. 9 in Hood’s Coblentz Dining Room. The countless individuals, organizations and foundations that have given generously to Hood have helped to establish nearly 200 named scholarships and prizes that support the education of a majority of Hood’s undergraduate students. Pictured to the right are Ms. Betsy Holran, daughter of the late Mrs. Carolyn Tillou Holran '60 for whom the scholarship is named, and scholarship recipient Kim Blocker '12.

Alums and Guests Gather in Boston
More than 40 alumnae, alumni, parents and friends gathered at The Colonial Inn in Concord, Mass., Oct. 19 to have refreshments following a private tour of The Orchard House, childhood home of Louisa May Alcott. Kristina Campbell Joyce ’67 served as Hood’s hostess during the tour, as many alums shared in the wonderful afternoon of literature and reconnecting. Alums Art Chosen for American Diabetes Art Search
Dianne Beebe Barske ’66 is one of nine artists out of 347 participants to be named a 2008 Art Search winner by the American Diabetes Association, and will have her work—pictured to the right—appear on an ADA holiday card in a national competition. All money raised from the sale of the cards goes to diabetes research. The cards may be ordered from the ADA Web site.

It Is Time To Nominate Some Great Alums
The Alumnae and Alumni of Hood College is accepting nominations for three awards: Excellence in Alumna or Alumnus Service Award, Distinguished Alumna or Alumnus Award and Outstanding Recent Alumna or Alumnus Award. Each year, distinguished alums are honored at the Alumnae and Alumni Luncheon during Reunion Weekend for their service to the College and for their career achievements. Field Hockey Team Raises Money for Breast Cancer
The Blazers field hockey team raised $500 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure at its regular season home finale Oct. 25 by selling pink t-shirts with a Hood field hockey logo to show their support for breast cancer awareness. The funds will be donated to Maryland’s Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate in Towson, Md.

Colloquium Series Continues With Lecture on Civil Rights and Poetry Reading
Hood’s fall 2008 Colloquium series continues Wednesday, Nov. 12 with a lecture by Professor Charles E. Cobb Jr., a distinguished reporter who has taught at various universities, titled “To Form a More Perfect Union: The Fight for Civil Rights and Citizenship.” The lecture will take place in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information on the lecture, read the full news story.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, award-winning poet and scholar Daneen Wardrop, professor of English at Western Michigan University, will give a poetry reading in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Her first book of poems, “The Odds of Being,” won the Gerald Cable Book Award. She has written two books of literary criticism, which focus on the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. Faculty Members Exhibit Art in Hodson Gallery
Eleven Hood faculty members will feature their works in photography, ceramics, sculpture, painting and drawing in an exhibit in the Hodson Gallery in the Tatem Arts Center. The exhibit will be on display from Thursday, Nov. 13 to Tuesday, Dec. 9, with a reception scheduled for Nov. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery. Fall Dance Ensemble Concert
Enjoy an evening of jazz, ballet, modern, tap and lyrical dance by the Hood College Dance Ensemble Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall. The performances will also feature guest artists from the greater Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia areas. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be taken at door. Chamber Singers Present Fall Concert
Hood’s Chamber Singers, under the direction of Brenda Weiser, director of choral activities, will present its fall concert, titled “The Natural Song,” Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. in Hood’s Brodbeck Music Hall. Students of voice instructor Jan Aaland will present a recital Sunday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Hood’s Brodbeck Music Hall. Brodbeck is not handicapped accessible.

The String Ensemble, under the direction of RoseAnn Markow Lester, and the Wind Ensemble, directed by Brian Hinkley, will present a joint program, which will include works for the individual ensembles as well as the combined group, Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in Hood’s Coffman Chapel.

The Jazz Ensemble, directed by J. Kevin Lewis, will present its fall concert Wednesday, Dec. 3 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in Hood’s Coffman Chapel.

The Early Music Ensemble, directed by William Simms, will present its fall concert Thursday, Dec. 4 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in Hood’s Brodbeck Music Hall. Brodbeck is not handicapped accessible.

Community Invited to Campus for Santa's Workshop
Hood’s Class of 2009 will host a holiday event, "Santa's Workshop," for members of the local community Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hood's Whitaker Campus Center. Children of all ages will have the opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa, and to participate in holiday craft activities and student-led games. The cost of the pictures is $5 for the first photo and $2 for each additional photo, and there is a small fee for each craft activity. Softball Team to Hold Bingo Fund-raiser

The Hood College softball team will host a Vera Bradley & Basket Bingo fund-raising event Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Junior Fire Co. # 2, located at 535 N. Market Street in Frederick, to help raise funds for their spring break games in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in March. Doors for the event open at 10 a.m. and the games begin at 11 a.m. Tickets are $25, which includes lunch. A total of 20 games will be played in addition to three specials and three raffles. Hood returns six letterwinners from last year's squad, all of whom have starting experience. Second-year head coach Jay Butler will turn to last season's leading scorer and rebounder Jen Willison (above) to pace the Blazers once again. The junior forward averaged 14.1 points and 9.0 rebounds and ranked in the top eight in the league in both categories. Senior guard Sara Wastler returns for her fourth season and looks to continue to climb Hood's career assists chart, where she currently sits in 10th place (144). Sophomore guard Allyson Lethbridge had an impressive freshman campaign and is one of Hood's top three-point threats. Hood entertains the College of Notre Dame (Md.) Gators Saturday in Gambrill Gymnasium.

The Blazers open up the 2008-09 campaign against a nationally ranked opponent at the Lycoming College Tournament Saturday. Hood will take on the No. 18 University of Scranton Royals at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the two-day tournament. Hood returns eight letterwinners from last year's squad, which finished third in the Capital Athletic Conference. Senior Ryan Junghans (above) paced the offense with a 20.0 scoring average last season and ranked among the conference leaders in numerous categories. Starters Tim Abercrombie and Rian McHenry also return to the hardwood for sixth-year head coach Tom Dickman.

Hood was idle last week but will travel to Waynesburg, Pa., Saturday for the NCAA Mideast Regionals. Last season senior Danielle Sgro (above) posted the program's fastest regional time (24:03) and Hood placed 33rd overall at the event.

Last fall the Blazers placed 37th at the event and posted the program's fastest combined time (2:26.09) in five trips to the regional. Junior William Andrews (above) was Hood's top finisher in 27:46.

Every Blazer rider came home with a ribbon Sunday at the University of Richmond show as Hood concluded its fall slate. Co-captain Emily Bernstein rode in the advanced walk/trot/canter class as Hood’s designated point rider for the division. Bernstein finished sixth giving Hood a point in the team standings. Freshman Katie Geiger also rode in the advanced walk/trot/canter division. In her third IHSA Show, Geiger finished fifth in her class. Another first-year rider, Amy Thompson, competed in the walk/trot class as that division’s designated point rider. Thompson finished second adding five points to Hood’s team score. The IHSA spring season begins Feb. 15, 2009 with a show in Poolesville, Md., hosted by George Washington University, American University and the University of Maryland.

The Blazers’ record-breaking season came to an end Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to second-seeded St. Mary’s College (Md.) in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. Rachelle Buhrman had 11 saves for Hood, while Cara Jordan (above) had the team’s only two shots on goal. Among the team records set this year were goals scored in a game (11), goals in a season (55), shutouts (10), consecutive shutouts (4) and unbeaten streak (7). On the individual side, Jordan and Whitney Boyer tied the marks for goals scored in a game (4) and points in a game (8). Additionally, Jordan and Carlie Colella tied the record for assists in a game (3).

Hood traveled to St. Mary’s College (Md.) Saturday where the Blazers lost 149-41 and 170-28 to Catholic University and St. Mary’s, respectively. Junior Erica Hamor led Hood with fourth place finishes in the 200 free (2:12.70) and the 100 free (1:00.22). Sophomore Kim Wolfgang (above) also came in fourth in the 100 back (1:07.60).

Chris Nemecek (above) took first in the 100 fly for the second time this season (55.84) in Hood’s tri-meet at St. Mary’s College (Md.) Saturday. As a team, the Blazers fell to both St. Mary’s (142-39) and Catholic University (158-36). Nemecek also placed third in the 200 free (1:54.46), while Matt Haynes came in third in the 50 free (23.36) and the 100 free (51.90). Chris Moreland rounded out the individual scoring for Hood with a third place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:13.75). The Blazers return to action Saturday with a CAC meet at Marymount University at 2 p.m.
