Upcoming Career Center Events
Do you want to learn the ins and outs of the interview process? Attend the panel on interviewing Tuesday Oct. 21 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Hood's multicultural suite, located on the second floor of the Whitaker Campus Center. Members of local human resource offices will share tips on what they expect from interviewees.

The career center and the Office of Alumnae and Alumni Relations will co-host a unique career networking reception. Hood seniors who are preparing for life after Hood will have an opportunity to interact with local business owners, nonprofit organization leaders and alums Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Brewer's Alley Restaurant & Brewery, located at 124 N. New Members Named to Board of Associates
Five new members were recently elected to Hood’s board of associates. They are: Mark E. Chilton, M.D., of Frederick, an orthopedic surgeon; Elizabeth Collmus Fisher of Frederick, daughter of Renie Quynn Collmus ’47; Mark Friis M.A. ’82 of Brookville, Md., president of Rodgers Consulting, Inc.; Kevin Lollar ’97, J.D., of Burkittsville, Md., an attorney and director of development for the Frederick City Housing Authority; and Cheryl Parrott M.A. ’06, of Middletown, Md., director of communications for the National Cancer Institute at Frederick, National Institutes of Health.

Hood’s fall Phonathon will run until Thursday, Nov. 13! Students will be calling alums and parents to ask for support of Hood’s Annual Funds. Your yearly gifts to the Annual Funds help provide the enriching academic environment and distinctive programs for which Hood is known. Students and Donors Scholarship Reception
Current students as well as past and present donors will be recognized at an endowed scholarship appreciation reception Sunday, Nov. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Coblentz Dining Room. The countless individuals, organizations and foundations that have given generously to Hood have helped to establish nearly 200 named scholarships that support the education of a majority of Hood’s undergraduate students.

61st Anniversary Performances of Handel's "Messiah"
The Hood College Choir, along with the choir from Mount St. Mary’s University, members of the larger Hood and local communities, soloists and a professional orchestra, will perform Handel’s majestic oratorio in Hood’s Coffman Chapel Saturday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. For concert and ticket information, read the full news story.

Alumna Named Woman of the Year
Jane Strevig Guyton ’49 was recently named Woman of the Year for 2008 by the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Washington County (Md.). Now retired, Guyton was named the first female high school principal in Washington County in 1988. Read the full news story about Jane.

Alumna Featured Speaker at Leadership Summit
Tina Wells ’02 will be the featured speaker at Essence Magazine’s “Women Who Are Shaping the World Leadership Summit” that will take place in New York City this month. Tina is the founder and CEO of her own New Jersey-based market research firm, Buzz Marketing Group, where she spots adolescent trends and passes that information on to interested companies.

Alumnus Named Vice President of Pharmaceutical Company
Peter Amanatides M.S. ’93 was recently appointed vice president of quality assurance and quality control for Noven Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a Miami-based company engaged in the research, development, manufacture, marketing and sale of prescription pharmaceutical products.

Professors Publish Research on Arena Chapel
Anne Derbes, Ph.D., professor of art and co-director of the Honors Program, and Mark Sandona, Ph.D., professor of English and chair of the English department, recently co-authored a book titled “The Usurer’s Heart: Giotto, Enrico Scrovengni, and the Arena Chapel in Padua.” Derbes and Sandona, who conducted a 10-year study of the early 14th century Arena Chapel and its frescoes by the Florentine painter Giotto, pieced together new historical evidence on the chapel’s origins and offer groundbreaking interpretations on the creation of the frescoes in their book. Hood Implements Emergency Notification Service
The College’s campus safety department recently implemented a new emergency notification service that gives College administration and security professionals the ability to reach students, faculty, staff, parents and others with time-sensitive information during unforeseen events or emergencies via voice, e-mail and text messaging. During critical situations, College officials can use the system to broadcast pertinent information and provide instructions as appropriate. Sign up for the emergency notification service.

Boston/Concord, Massachusetts Private Tour and Reception
Sunday, Oct. 19, 2 p.m., Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House, 399 Lexington Rd., P.O. Box 343, Concord, MA 01742. Join artist Kristina Campbell Joyce ’67, area alums and guests for a private tour of Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House. In 1868 Louisa May Alcott wrote her classic work “Little Women” at Orchard House, which is also the setting of the novel, inspiring guests to comment that “a visit to Orchard House is like walking through the book!” As an additional treat, guest will have the opportunity to view and purchase Kristina’s artwork. A wine and cheese reception will follow the tour at The Colonial Inn, Thoreau Room starting at 4 p.m. Join us for one or both events. Art Exhibit Showcased in Hodson Gallery
Area artist, educator and writer Barry Nemett will showcase his exhibit, “Language of Landscape: Works from Italy,” in Hood’s Hodson Gallery until Thursday, Nov. 6. Nemett’s work of oversized landscapes, often encompassing several panels, are comprised of images drawn and painted from his memories of the many places he has visited, juxtaposed into one composition. "Rock the Vote" Event Part of Social Visionary Speakers Series
Political and pop culture commentator Jehmu Greene will visit campus as part of Hood’s Social Visionary Speakers Series to give a lecture titled “Rock the Vote: If You Don’t Vote, Don’t Complain … Get Involved! Vote, Run, Lead!,” Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons. The event is co-sponsored by the career center and office of service learning; the president, provost and student life offices; the sociology and social work, history and political science, and honors departments; the African-American Studies Program; and the Hood Rocks the Vote Coalition. Ceramics Workshops Offered
A series of ceramics workshops will be offered at Hood during the fall semester.

A “Photographing Ceramics” workshop will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25-26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first floor of Hood’s Carson Cottage. The fee for participants is $175.

“The Art of Handbuilding” workshop will be offered each Tuesday from Oct. 28 to Dec. 9 (excluding Nov. 25) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 1 of Hood’s Tatem Arts Center. The cost of the workshop is $170.

A beginning and intermediate wheel class will be offered each Thursday from Oct. 28 to Dec. 9 (excluding Nov. 25) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 1 of Hood’s Tatem Arts Center. The fee for the workshop is $170.

“Kiln Technology” will be offered Nov. 6-9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Hood’s Tatem Arts Center. The cost of the workshop is $300.

A wood firing workshop will be offered Nov. 13-16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Hood’s Tatem Arts Center. The workshop fee is $300.

U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings Lectures on MLK's Legacy
Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) will discuss civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s contributions to and impact on the civil rights movement in a lecture titled “Dr. King’s Messages to the Young People of Our Time” Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 12:45 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall. The lecture is part of Hood’s yearlong series of events marking the 40th anniversary of the assassination of King. Guest Lecturer to Discuss Status of Islamic Women
Nelly van Doorn-Harder, Ph.D., the Surjit Patheja chair in world religions and ethics at Valparaiso University and a widely published expert in the fields of minority cultures and gender issues, will discuss today’s status of Islamic women Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall. Carhart Guest Pianist Recital

Field Hockey Senior Day and Alumnae Game

Stem Cell Research Lecture
Students who were awarded Summer Science Research Institute grants, funded by Invitrogen Foundation, will present their work at a poster session Wednesday, Oct. 29. Following the poster session, Mahendra S. Rao, M.D., Ph.D., vice president for research, stem cells and regenerative medicine at Invitrogen Corporation, will give a lecture on the progress of stem cell research. Hood College Theatre Fall Performance
Hood College Theatre’s fall production, William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 30-Nov. 1 and Nov. 6-8 in the Avalon Studio Theatre in Hood’s Tatem Arts Center. All performances begin at 8 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the door one hour prior to each show. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for Hood faculty and staff. Colloquium Series Continues With Lectures on States' and Civil Rights
Hood’s fall 2008 Colloquium series continues Thursday, Nov. 6 with a lecture by William J. Cooper, Ph.D., the Boyd professor of history at Louisiana State University, titled “States’ Rights, Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy.” The lecture will take place in Hood’s Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall from 7 to 8 p.m.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, Professor Charles E. Cobb Jr., a distinguished reporter who has taught at various universities, will give a lecture on American race relations, titled “To Form a More Perfect Union: The Fight for Civil Rights and Citizenship,” from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons.

Mathematical Association of America Conference
The fall meeting of the Maryland-Washington, D.C.-Virginia section of the Mathematical Association of America will be held at Hood Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8. The conference will include talks on cryptology, chaos and evolution; contributed paper sessions; MAA books on sale; and a banquet on Friday night, and lunch on Saturday. Fall Dance Ensemble Concert
Enjoy an evening of jazz, ballet, modern, tap and lyrical dance by the Hood College Dance Ensemble Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall. The performances will also feature guest artists from the greater Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia areas. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be taken at door. The Blazers hit the road for a pair of contests this week. Hood took the University of Mary Washington to the wire Thursday in a Capital Athletic Conference game. The Eagles scored a late goal with only 1:14 showing on the clock to clinch the victory. Junior Brandy Noel and senior Jess Head (above) scored for the Blazers. Noel notched her team-best fourth goal of the fall while Head tallied the third score of her Blazer career.

Hood eclipsed its win total from 2007 with a 2-0 shutout over SUNY Purchase Sunday. Freshman Jessica Devine (above) knocked in both of Hood's scores against the Panthers to give her a team-high nine goals on the season. The Blazers are only five goals away from breaking the school record for goals in a season (46). Hood, currently tied for third with York College (Pa.) in the Capital Athletic Conference standings with nine points, entertains fifth-place Salisbury University Saturday.

Junior Carlin Rabie registered his second goal of the season in the final three seconds of regulation against St. Mary's College (Md.) Wednesday for Hood's lone score of the afternoon. Junior Shawn Fernholz turned away 10 Seahawk shot attempts on the day. Saturday Hood managed three shots on goal, all by freshman Christopher Mendez (above), against Wesley College in another CAC contest. The Blazers have three home games left on the docket, the first against Salisbury University Saturday at Thomas Athletic Field.
