New Members Named to Board of Associates

Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony
The 2nd annual Hood College Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center. Student and Donors Scholarship Reception
Current students, as well as past and present donors, will be recognized at an endowed scholarship appreciation reception Sunday, Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center. The countless individuals, organizations and foundations that have given generously to Hood have helped to establish more than 300 named scholarships that support the education of a majority of Hood’s undergraduate students.

Secretary of Higher Education Visits Campus
On Sept. 23, Frederick was capital for the day as Maryland Secretary of Higher Education James E. Lyons Sr., spent his afternoon at Hood. In addition to meeting with President Volpe and senior administrators, Secretary Lyons spoke with two students—Phil Yerby ’11 and Janelle Dionne '10. The day concluded with a cabinet meeting in downtown Frederick. Your Phones May Be Ringing
Hood’s fall phonathon will run until Thursday, Nov. 12, and students will be calling alums and parents to ask for support of Hood’s Annual Funds. Your yearly gifts provide funds for student scholarships, academic programs and the innovative learning environment for which Hood is known. Last year, phonathon callers raised more than $350,000 in gifts and pledges for Hood, directly benefiting students and faculty. 62nd Anniversary of Handel's "Messiah"
The Hood College Choir—under the direction of Brenda Weiser, director of choral activities—along with the Montgomery College choirs, and professional orchestra and soloists, will continue the annual tradition of presenting Handel’s “Messiah” in Hood’s Coffman Chapel. Local Frederick Graduate Alumna Named Woman of the Year
Hagerstown Police Lt. Margaret A. Kline M.A. ’92 was recently named The Hagerstown Business and Professional Women’s Club 2009 Woman of the Year. Margaret began working with the police department in 1974 and went on to become the first sworn female officer to work uniform patrol. Correction: Management Programs Accreditation Process
In the Aug. 13 issue of Bl@zer Links, it was printed that Hood’s management programs have earned accreditation by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. The management programs have been accepted as candidates and the process of earning accreditation is still underway. We apologize for the misprint and wish the programs luck in the accreditation process.

Hood Professor Offers Trip to Europe
Noel Lester, concert pianist and professor of music at Hood, in conjunction with Smolka Tours—a specialist in organizing classical music trips—is planning a group trip to Scandinavia in June 2010. The trip—which will be open to Hood students who may earn college credit, alumnae and alumni, faculty and staff, and friends of the College—will include sightseeing, museums tours, concerts and music festivals, and the magnificent scenery of Scandinavia. In past years, Professor Lester has led two trips to the British Isles, two to Italy, and several to central and eastern Europe. Past participants have heard concerts and operas at Glyndebourne, Covent Garden, La Scala, La Fenice, the Rome Opera, the Vienna Staatsoper, the National Theater in Prague, the Arena di Verona, the Edinburgh Festival, the Mozarteum in Salzburg and many others.

New Linked-to-Work Database System
The career center has a new database system, Linked-to-Work. Hood students and alumni can utilize Linked-to-Work to search for internships and part- and full-time jobs. Hodson Gallery Exhibit
Artist Philip Lindsey will showcase his drawings and paintings with biblical, mythological, legendary and contemporary themes in Hood’s Hodson Gallery in the Tatem Arts Center until Wednesday, Oct. 28. A reception, featuring a talk by the artist, will be held Thursday, Oct. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery. Hood College Theatre to Stage Harold Pinter's "Old Times"
Hood College Theatre will perform its fall production of Harold Pinter’s “Old Times” Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 29-31 and Nov. 5-7. Directed by Joe Brady, director of Hood College Theatre, the performances will take place in Hood’s Avalon Performing Arts Studio in the Tatem Arts Center at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 and at 8 p.m. on all other performance dates. General admission tickets are $10; students, and Hood faculty and staff tickets are $5; and Hood students are free. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the door beginning 30 minutes before each show. Re-discover Hood Event
The office of admission invites alums and their daughters, sons or grandchildren to visit campus for a Re-discover Hood event Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons. Alums can see the exciting things happening at their alma mater and find out more about affordable college payment options, while prospective students can speak with current Hood students and learn important college search strategies. Life Technologies Corporation Lecture
James Meegan, Ph.D., senior director of research and development for Life Technologies Clinical Diagnostics business unit, will deliver the keynote address at Hood’s Summer Science Research Institute event Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall. Dr. Meegan was previously the senior director of biodefense operations in Life Technologies Frederick, Md., office, and has served as the program officer for acute viral diseases and biodefense with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.

Equestrian Team to Hold Fourth Annual Silent Auction
Hood's equestrian team will hold its fourth annual silent auction and reception Saturday, Dec. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Hood's Whitaker Campus Center Commons. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit the equestrian team and their endeavors. In addition, a portion of the earnings from the silent auction will be donated to a foundation involved in equine rescues. Freshman Megan Cahill scored a goal and had an assist in an 0-2 week for the Blazers. Cahill's first career assist came on a goal by sophomore Sam Liptrap (above) in the first 30 seconds of Thursday's game at the University of Mary Washington. Cahill also scored Hood's lone goal against Cedar Crest College Sunday. The Blazers entertain Marywood University in a nonleague game Friday.

Junior Aaron Prescott shot an 11-over 82 and was the top finisher for the Blazers, who traveled to the Bent Creek Country Club Monday for the Bent Creek Invitational hosted by Franklin & Marshall College. Prescott finished in a tie for 21st out of 94 golfers at the 19-team invitational. Fellow juniors Andy Alger and Evan Chaney carded an 86 and 87, respectively. Sophomore Tyler Fairley (105) and freshman Connor McKenna (above) (119) comprised the remainder of the Hood squad at this tournament as the Blazers wrapped up their fall slate.

Hood saw its six-game unbeaten streak come to an end Tuesday at Catholic University. The Blazers allowed four goals, matching a season-high. The Blazers host Stevenson University Wednesday in a rematch of last season's Capital Athletic Conference tournament game that was decided by penalty kicks and saw Hood record its first-ever CAC playoff win. Junior Alexa Hubicki, Liz Rakowski '09 and sophomore Casey Miller all converted their penalty kick opportunities in that shootout, lifting the Blazers to the dramatic victory. Currently in second place in the conference, the Mustangs bring a four-game winning streak into Wednesday's tilt, while senior Nikki Antalffy (above) and the Blazers look to snap a two-game slide and climb out of a sixth-place tie with Wesley College.

Freshman William Lane made seven saves against St. Mary's College (Md.) Tuesday in the Blazers' home finale. The squad will hit the road for its final five regular season matches, beginning with a Monday trip to Huntingdon, Pa., to take on the Juniata College Eagles. Six different players have contributed goals this fall, including two apiece by senior Corey DeMaster, sophomore Mike Yencho (above) and freshman Naseem Zietoon.

The Blazers suffered three setbacks last week to wrap up the fall docket. Senior Jillian Elkaim downed Miku White from the College of Notre Dame in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) and teamed with sophomore Emily Shrodel (above) to defeat White and Kelcy Bye, 8-2, at first doubles. The Blazers will resume play in the spring.

Sophomore Carter Reitman, junior Mike Hardman, senior David Blowe and sophomore Andrew Blowe (above) were all winners in their respective singles matches as the Blazers evened their fall record at 2-2. Hardman finished the fall with a perfect 4-0 mark, all at the second singles position. The doubles tandem of Reitman and Hardman also remained unbeaten with a decisive 8-1 victory over Shepherd's Taylor Boyle and Nathan Jones. The Blowe brothers knocked off Kent Thomas and David Leonard for their second doubles win of the fall.

The Blazers won back-to-back matches for the first time since October 2006 with victories over Trinity University (D.C.) and Penn State Harrisburg Saturday. Led by junior Kristina Straub's 12 kills, the Blazers put down a season-high 41 kills in a four-set win over the Nittany Lions. With the win, the Blazers avenged a five-set loss to PSU Harrisburg from earlier in the season. Junior Chelsea Weaver registered a career-high 36 digs opposite the Nittany Lions while freshman Brittany Tribett's 34 assists in that match were also a career-high. Straub finished with a double-double (12 kills and 15 digs). Freshman Brittany Lethbridge (above) notched a season-high with 17 digs in the Harrisburg match. The Blazers journey to Salisbury, Md., Thursday to take on the top team in the Capital Athletic Conference, the Salisbury University Sea Gulls. Then Saturday, the team will host Trinity and Randolph College in a tri-match at Gambrill Gymnasium beginning at noon.
