A New Academic Year Begins at Hood
First-year and returning Hood students, faculty, staff, friends, and alumnae and alumni were present at Convocation Aug. 24 to celebrate the beginning of another academic year. The Hood community welcomed more than 400 new undergraduate students, bringing the total fall 2009 enrollment to nearly 2,500. Students received welcoming remarks from President Ronald J. Volpe, and a convocation address from Linda Scott, professor of psychology. A campus-wide picnic was held on the residential quadrangle following the ceremony. View photos of Convocation 2009.

Hood Highlights

New Looks on Campus
Students returning to campus found that not all had been quiet during the summer! Several renovations were made, including the installation of a nearly 16-foot tall street clock outside of Whitaker Campus Center. The clock was donated through the combined fund-raising efforts of the classes of 1958, in celebration of their 50th reunion, and 2008, as their senior class gift. For more information about the clock tower, read the full news story.

Students and professors are also already taking advantage of the recently-completed outdoor classroom in front of Rosenstock Hall, a gift from the Class of 2007. The classroom features five wooden benches on a brick patio and can accommodate a class of between 20 to 25 students.

The new athletic turf field, scoreboard, locker room facilities and athletic complex entrance were also completed during the summer. The first game on the new field—a field hockey contest against Salisbury University—was played Sept. 1. Join the Hood community for the dedication ceremony and unveiling of the College’s new outdoor complex Friday, Oct. 23 at noon. To R.S.V.P. for the event, contact the office of institutional advancement or call (301) 696-3700 or (800) 707-5280, option 2. Please R.S.V.P. by Oct. 19.

Your Phones May Be Ringing
Hood’s fall phonathon began yesterday and will run until Nov. 12. Students will be calling alums and parents to ask for support of Hood’s Annual Funds. Your yearly gifts provide funds for student scholarships, academic programs and the innovative learning environment for which Hood is known. Last year, phonathon callers raised more than $350,000 in gifts and pledges for Hood, directly benefiting students and faculty. Please take the time to chat with the students to find out what is happening on campus today as well as to make your gift to the College. Visit the annual giving Web page to make your gift online.
