A New Academic Year Begins at Hood |

![]() New Looks on Campus Students and professors are also already taking advantage of the recently-completed outdoor classroom in front of Rosenstock Hall, a gift from the Class of 2007. The classroom features five wooden benches on a brick patio and can accommodate a class of between 20 to 25 students. The new athletic turf field, scoreboard, locker room facilities and athletic complex entrance were also completed during the summer. The first game on the new field—a field hockey contest against Salisbury University—was played Sept. 1. Join the Hood community for the dedication ceremony and unveiling of the College’s new outdoor complex Friday, Oct. 23 at noon. Become a Legacy at Hood Alumnae in the News Medora Dashiell Sheehan ’75 opened Turtle Rock Tutor, a new one-on-one tutoring service that mentors kindergarten through sixth-grade students in any academic subject, in Palmer Ranch near Sarasota, Fla. Medora has 24 years of teaching experience in both the public and private sectors. For more information about Medora’s tutoring service, read the full news story. Colloquium Celebrates 10th Anniversary The colloquium will begin Thursday, Sept. 24 with a lecture titled “The Small Golden Shrine of Tutankhamun and Ankhesenamun,” by Gay Robins, Samuel Candler Dobbs professor of art history at Emory University. The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons. On Wednesday, Sept. 30, historical novelist William Heath, professor emeritus of English at Mount St. Mary’s University, will discuss the historical novel and read from his book titled “Blacksnake’s Path: The True Adventures of William Wells,” which will be followed by a book signing. Women's Cross Country Last Week This Week The top finisher for the Blazers at McDaniel was senior Jessica Stanley who was the ninth college runner (11th overall) at 5,000 meters. She was joined in earning medalist honors on the long course by Maria Moss (14th college finisher), as the top 15 college runners received recognition. Rounding out the scoring for the Blazers were Joanna LaBoue (18th team finisher) and Emily Brownlee (26th team finisher). Sam Smith recorded a 34th place team finish, as Hood finished fourth. In the women’s short course race, Chloe Ey (above) and Kristina Coggins participated in their first college races, finishing 22nd and 24th, respectively. Hood travels to York College (Pa.) for a meet Saturday.
Men's Cross Country Last Week This Week Freshman Brett Shelley (above) had the top finish on the day as the 11th college finisher on the long course (12th overall), earning medalist honors. He returned a half hour later to match the feat on the short course, again finishing as the 11th college runner. William Andrews ran No. 2 for the Blazers in both races. His highest finish was 17th on the short course. Blair Ames ran No. 3 in both races, the 21st finisher on the short course. Rounding out the scoring on the men’s side was Brendan Greenlees, who competed in his 28th race in a Hood College cross country jersey, the second-most in program history. Greenlees was the 34th college finisher on the long course. Dan Gudeman also competed in both races finishing as the 31st team finisher on the 3,000 meter course. Following in 34th was Jordan McNeill who finished his first college race. Hood travels to York College (Pa.) for a meet Saturday.
Field Hockey (0-3, 0-2 CAC) Last Week This Week After a nine-day layoff, Hood returns to action Thursday hosting regional rival Goucher College, a team it has beaten only once in seven meetings. Hood's lone victory over the Gophers came during the 2005 campaign (2-0). In Tuesday's setback to the York College (Pa.) Spartans, junior goalkeeper Anne Marie Hantman (above) turned away eight shots and freshman defender Michelle Buhrman made three defensive saves. Hantman is tied for third in the Capital Athletic Conference in saves.
Women's Soccer (3-2, 1-2 CAC) Last Week This Week Senior Nikki Antalffy and sophomores Carlie Colella and Casey Miller (above) netted single tallies in a 3-0 shutout of visiting Purchase College Saturday afternoon. Hood junior Cara Jordan tied former Blazer Tamara Maggard '07 for first place on the program's career assists chart with her 14th assist on Colella's goal in the 61st minute. Hood's seasonal scoring leader with 10 points (4 goals, 2 assists), Jordan is also one goal shy of tying Jamie Summers '02 for second place in career goals (23). Hood has a pair of nonleague matches slated for this week. ![]() Men's Soccer (1-3, 0-0 CAC) Last Week This Week Hood earned its first victory of the season Thursday by posting its fourth shutout of Mt. Aloysius in five meetings. Hood set a school record by firing 67 shots against the Mounties in the lopsided win. Freshman Naseem Zietoon tallied his first two collegiate goals to spark Hood to the win. Classmate Jaime Ramirez (above) also picked up a pair of assists in the game. The Blazers look to even their record this week with a pair of nonleague road matches before opening conference play next week. ![]() Women's Tennis (0-0, 0-0 CAC) This Week Senior Dani Hunt (above) and the Blazers open the fall tennis season Saturday against Catholic University at the Baker Park Tennis Courts. Hunt won 10 singles matches last season, including three of four last fall.
Men's Tennis (0-0, 0-0 CAC) This Week Hood has just three fall matches on the docket and will play two of them this weekend. Hood's contest with Catholic University Saturday will be played at the Baker Park Tennis Courts. The Blazers return six letterwinners from last season including sophomore Carter Reitman (above) who won 11 singles matches during his rookie season.
Volleyball (0-3, 0-0 CAC) Last Week This Week Hood makes its home debut Tuesday against regional rival Johns Hopkins University and entertains its first Capital Athletic Conference foe Wednesday when the University of Mary Washington visits Gambrill Gymnasium. Junior tri-captain Chelsea Weaver notched a career-high with 22 digs in a five-set thriller at Penn State Harrisburg Thursday. Freshman Brittany Tribett also registered a career-high with 31 assists versus the Nittany Lions. Senior Ashley Burns recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 19 digs to go along with seven service aces and junior Kristina Straub (above) finished with eight kills and 12 digs.
