DR. CHARLES E. TRESSLER: It is with regret that we announce the death of Dr. Charles E. Tressler on May 25, 2006, at the age of 83. Many alums will remember Dr. Tressler, who taught in the department of education from 1964 to 1990. Upon his retirement, he was named the Giles Professor Emeritus of Early Childhood Education. During his retirement years he continued to remain active in the Hood and Frederick communities. Cards or notes may be directed to Mrs. Charles E. KUDOS: The Classes of 1956 and 1981 showed their Hood spirit at the Alumnae and Alumni Luncheon when they presented their class gifts to President Ronald J. Volpe. The Class of 1956 class gift committee, comprised of Virginia Turnbull Hecklinger, Sandy Newing, Susan Peters Wirths, Carole Oswald Carter and Stephanie Lundy Normann, presented President Volpe with a class gift of $118,489. Of that gift, $18,000 went to the Library Initiative. Their gift represented a class participation rate of 76.24 percent. The Class of 1981 exceeded the $25,000 challenge put forth by classmates Leigh Moomaw McBride, Lindy Small and Linda Rupy Spar. The three presented the gift of $71,212 with a class participation rate of 44 percent.

MATHEMATICS STUDENTS HONORED FOR RESEARCH: Kathryn Linehan ’06 and Beverly Raffa ’06 recently won prizes for their research in mathematics at an undergraduate conference held at Loyola College in conjunction with the spring meeting of the Maryland-Washington, D.C./Virginia section of the Mathematical Association. HOOD ELEVATES TRACK AND FIELD TO VARSITY STATUS: The Athletic Department will elevate the men’s and women’s track and field programs to varsity status beginning this fall. This will increase the number of varsity sports at the College to 19. The track and field team has been competing as a club sport under the direction of Brent Ayer. Click here for the full story.

SOFTBALL PLACES NINE PLAYERS ON THE ALL-AWCC TEAM: Hood dominated the 2006 Women’s Colleges Conference Softball Team with nine selections, a league high. Shortstop Sara Wastler ’09 led the way by earning the AWCC Most Outstanding Player and Newcomer of the Year awards. Click here to see the other student-athletes who were honored.

CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED: The 22nd annual Summer Chamber Music Festival will feature Hood faculty artists as well as guest musicians. "EMBRACING CHAOS" EXHIBIT DISPLAYED IN TATEM: An exhibition that explores wood-fired porcelain and stoneware forms will be on display in Hood College's Hodson Gallery in the Tatem Arts Center from Saturday, June 24 to Sunday July 23. The work of Shawn M. Grove will be showcased in an exhibit entitled "Embracing Chaos." A reception and gallery talk, which are both free and open to the public, will be held Friday, June 23 from 6-8 p.m. The Gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Click here for more information.
