Photo from the Zimmerman Collection DO YOU RECOGNIZE ANYONE IN THESE PICTURES? The Historical Society of Frederick County is asking Hood alums to help identify people, places and events of hundreds of Hood College photographs. These photographs are part of the Zimmerman Collection, a collection of more than 6,000 scanned photographs of mid-20th century people, places and events in Frederick County. The Society is making this Frederick Family Album available online in the hopes that visitors will assist in providing additional identifying information. Click here for more information to view the pictures and if you see a person, place or event you recognize, contact David Maloney being sure to reference the photograph's number when doing so. Information is stored in a database that will be made available to future generations of researchers.

KUDOS: Lauren Davies ’04, Michael Dillman ’02, Shahrzad Ehdaivand '03 and Rebecca Fishack ‘03 are featured in this year’s Hood College admissions view book. Their pictures and brief biographies focus on their professions and the impact their Hood education had on their pursuits after college. Congratulations, Lauren, Michael, Shahrzad, and Rebecca!

Rwanda Project THROUGH THE EYES OF CHILDREN – THE RWANDA PROJECT: Social Visionary Series, Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, 7 p.m., Whitaker Campus Center Commons. Kesra Hoffman, project coordinator for "Through the Eyes of Children," will speak to the Hood College community about this remarkable project and reflect on the tragedy of the Rwandan genocide. "Through the Eyes of Children" is a photographic story that began when children from the Imbabazi Orphanage, on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, were given disposable cameras and asked to photograph themselves and their community. This unique photo exhibit, which earned international attention, captures the reality of the genocide and the impact it had on the lives of the children, many of whom were left orphaned. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CONFERENCE AT HOOD COLLEGE: Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, 8 a.m., Rosenstock Hall Auditorium. The fourth annual "Into the Light" conference will address the impact of domestic violence in our communities and in the workplace. Keynote speaker, Cindy Southworth, director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, will speak on high-tech stalking and domestic violence. Dr. Gerald McKnight DR. GERALD MCKNIGHT TO HOLD BOOKSIGNING: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at 7 p.m., Beneficial-Hodson Library, Reading Porch, 2nd floor. Gerald McKnight, professor emeritus of history and former chair of the department of history and political science, will be on hand to discuss and sign his book, "Breach of Trust: How the Warren Commission Failed the Nation and Why." Library Books TURNING YOUR LOVE OF BOOKS INTO ACTION: The Beneficial-Hodson Library is looking for conservators. For more than 20 years a group of dedicated individuals have donated their time and talents to the Library repairing damaged books. The team of conservators will train up to six volunteers to work five or six hours a week, typically Monday and Wednesday mornings. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please contact library director Jan Samet O’Leary, library director for more information.

HOOD GALLERY EXHIBIT TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF PROFESSOR ELAINE GATES: Elaine Gates, former associate professor emerita of art, passed away in March 2004. To honor her memory and the impact she had on students during her tenure from 1960-1997, artists Connie Costigan and Michael Krausz will display their work in Hodson Gallery in the Tatem Arts Center from Oct. 5-Nov. 13. A reception and informal talk by the artists, who were close friends of Elaine's, is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 7, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Hodson Gallery.

Brownian Motion BROWNIAN MOTION: ROBERT BROWN TO ALBERT EINSTEIN: Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, 5 p.m., Hodson Science and Technology Center, Room 131. Allen Flora, professor of physics at Hood, will explain how Einstein offered a method to prove the existence of atoms and provided an explanation for Brownian motion, the random movement of microscopic particles suspended in a liquid or gas.

Charles M. Marcus program SUCCESS IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT: HOW TO TAKE ACTION AND ACHIEVE MORE: Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, 6:30 p.m., Rosenstock Auditorium. Charles M. Marcus, a national best-selling author, specializes in motivating, inspiring and empowering people to perform consistently at their highest levels. This program is a part of Disability Awareness Month.

FALL DANCE CONCERT: Saturday, Oct 22, 2005, 7:30-9:30 p.m., Rosenstock Auditorium. The Hood College Dance Ensemble will present its Fall Dance Concert, choreographed and under the artistic direction of Francine Marsili. The concert will include a new jazz work, Irish dancing and high-energy works by the Hood Ensemble.

SAFE HARVEST, TRICK-OR-TREATING: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, 6:30-8 p.m., Whitaker Campus Center, games and light refreshments. Trick-or-treating in the dorms will take place from 8-9 p.m. Motar Board sponsors this annual event to provide a safe site for children of the Frederick Community to participate in Halloween activities.

Mary Bateson A SCHOLAR AND SUFFRAGIST AT A WOMEN’S COLLEGE: MARY BATESON (1865-1906), Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, 8-9 p.m., Whitaker Campus Center. Mary Dockray-Miller of Lesley College will chronicle Bateson's life as medievalist and suffragist and discuss the history of women’s higher education in England and the currents of the first wave of English feminism. Bateson’s life illustrated an inspiring blend of serious scholarship and devoted political activism. Click here for more information.

Stargazing at Hood STARGAZING AT HOOD: Each Wednesday (when the College is open) through Dec. 7 the Williams Observatory will be open free of charge from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. for stargazing. Ken Howard, lecturer in astronomy at Hood, will be available to answer questions, and the observatory telescope and the portable telescopes will provide views of the planets and other popular celestial sights. BLACK HOLES, BIG BANGS AND COSMIC STRINGS: Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, 5 p.m., Hodson Science and Technology Center, Room 131. Deborah Konkowski, professor of mathematics at the U.S. Naval Academy, will lecture about the three phenomena that are the most famous predictions of general relativity.

EARLY MUSIC ENSEMBLE FALL CONCERT: Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, 8 p.m., Brodbeck Music Hall. Hood's Early Music Ensemble, under the direction of William Simms, will present its fall concert.
