The Blazers put up a fight at Shenandoah Wednesday, but fell 11-10 after trailing 7-2 at the half. Freshman Kris Miner scored his first career hat trick, while senior Jason Anderson and sophomore Sophie Lazar (above) each had two goals. Hood’s 10 goals are a program record for goals in a single game. The Blazers went on to drop a 26-4 decision to the No. 10 Lynchburg Hornets on March 29. Senior Will Oconis finished with a hat trick and freshman Nicholas O’Brien had 13 saves in his first career start in goal.

Hood started off the week with a disappointing loss, but ended with a bang. On Wednesday the Blazers lost 17-16 in sudden-death overtime at Shenandoah. Sophomore Sarah Balukoff (above) led Hood with six goals, while sophomores Lauren Perzan and Brandy Noel had four and three, respectively. The Blazers then traveled to Wesley College Friday where they lost 15-4. But on Sunday, Hood racked up its first victory of the 2008 season, trouncing Hollins University 15-0 at home. Once again, Balukoff paced the Blazers, matching her single-game high with six goals. The win over Hollins marks head coach Molly Hesterberg’s first career coaching victory.

The Blazers extended their record-breaking winning streak to 13 last week, besting the field of four teams to capture the Gallaudet University Tournament championship in Washington, D.C. Hood won its first-round game, 17-4, over Wells College in five innings Saturday. Later that day the Blazers downed the College of Notre Dame (Md.) in a 12-0 shutout. On Sunday Hood took on the hosting Gallaudet Bison. Sophomore Stephanie Gardner had her first-ever grand slam to spark Hood to a 9-8 victory. In the championship game against Wells the Blazers came off with a 10-3 win. Junior Jen Lacy (above), a junior, went 3-for-3 and scored a run to go with her team-high three RBI. Junior pitcher Jamie Gardner was named the tournament’s most outstanding player after allowing two earned runs in 20 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts.

The Blazers edged out Chestnut Hill College, 5-4, Saturday for their first win of the spring.
Aboubacar Camara, David Blowe, Garrett Loomer and Phil Yerby (above) all captured singles victories for Hood. At No. 2 singles, Camara defeated Shane Lester, 6-3, 6-3, while Blowe downed Jim Stewart, 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. At No. 5 singles, Loomer bested Derek Fikely in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. Yerby gave Hood its fourth win of the afternoon at the No. 6 singles spot, defeating Reese Brown 6-4, 6-3. Yerby and Blowe rounded out the Blazers' scoring, winning 8-4 at third doubles.

Hood’s women’s tennis team picked up a pair of nonconference wins Saturday. In the first game of the afternoon the Blazers blanked Chestnut Hill College, 9-0. Larisa Buriak’s No. 2 singles match was the only contest that went to three sets, as the junior won 6-1, 3-6, 10-4. Hood went on to beat the College of Notre Dame (Md.), 5-3. Christine Ocampos-Barry defeated Miku White at the No. 1 singles spot, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6, while Morgan Wright and Laura Wanner (above) each won by large margins at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. The Ocampos-Barry/Buriak and Wright/Wanner doubles tandems both won their matches by a score of 8-2.

Last weekend, the Blazers traveled to Fredericksburg, Va., where they competed in the Battleground Relays hosted by the University of Mary Washington. Sophomores William Andrews and Blair Ames each set school records – Andrews in his third-place finish in the steeplechase (10:49.90) and Ames in his second-place finish in the 1500 meters (4:17.09). In addition, Hood’s 4x400 relay squad set a new school mark by a time of 3:35.05. In the field events, Robert Lindsay won the hammer throw (109’ 10’’), setting a personal record in the process. Junior Mattia Mabellini (above) and the Blazers journey to Washington, Pa., for the Washington & Jefferson College Invitational Saturday.

Nine school records dropped as the Blazers’ women’s track team competed in the Battleground Relays at the University of Mary Washington. Junior Danielle Sgro bested her previous school record in the 10,000 meters, clocking in at 42:20.90. Classmate Katie Thomas (above) set a new record in the 100-meter hurdles (18.06), while freshman Lauren Smith lowered the school record in the steeple in her third-place finish (12:45.0.). Junior Jessica Parrish set record in the 100-meter dash (12.87) and the long jump (15’ 5 1/2’’), taking second place in both. Freshman Kayla Murphy tossed the hammer 87’ 0’’ in another record-breaking performance. Finally, Hood’s 4x400 relay team set a new school mark with a time of 5:11.80, over two seconds faster than the previous record.
