The Blazers and the Wesley College Wolverines engaged in the longest game in the five-year history of the men's program Monday evening as Wesley emerged victorious in four overtimes, 111-106. Hood is currently tied for third place in the Capital Athletic Conference and is hoping to remain in the top four in order to host at least one CAC tournament game next week. Saturday will be Senior Day at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School when head coach Tom Dickman and the Blazers recognize senior co-captain Arthur Claybon (above) before the game.

Junior Whitney Schultheis (above) and the Blazers wrap up the regular season this week with three conference contests in six days.
Hood hosted Wesley College Monday and had the Wolverines on the ropes but came up just short, falling 72-64. Jen Willison notched her sixth double-double of 21 points and 17 rebounds and the Blazers outrebounded Wesley by 20 (51-31). Hood travels to Villa Julie Wednesday and hosts Salisbury in the regular season finale Saturday. Hood was originally slated to travel to Trinity University (D.C.) Monday but due to the priority of conference games, the contest was cancelled.

Under the direction of first-year head coach and former Blazer assistant Eric Dummann, the Hood College men's lacrosse team journey's to southern Maryland Tuesday for its season and CAC opener against St. Mary's College (Md.). The Blazers return their top four scorers from last season as well as starting goalkeeper Sam Hofmann (above). Hood's home opener is slated for Saturday against Virginia Wesleyan College at Thomas Athletic Field.

The No. 3-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls (1-0, 1-0 CAC) defeated the Hood College women's lacrosse team (0-1, 0-1 CAC) 24-0 Saturday in the season opener for both schools. The Blazers, facing a formidable Salisbury opponent in the program's first-ever Capital Athletic Conference game, were unable to get off a shot on goal in the contest. Brandy Noel (above) was credited with three draw controls and Lauren Perzan, Patsy Davis, Jen Graham, Lauren Lieb and Noel all snagged ground balls for Hood. Lieb made four saves on the day and needs just 37 more to become the program's all-time saves leader.

The Blazer men had a number of stellar individual races at the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference championships at St. Mary's College (Md.). Freshman Robert Ennis broke two school records in the 100 breast (1:04.03) and the 200 breast (2:21.27) and Matt Haynes (above) lowered the school standard in the 100 free (49.61). Senior Jason Kinder qualified for the championship final in the 500 free and placed eighth in 5:01.14, took fourth in the 1650 free in 17:16.06 and won the consolation heat of the 100 back in 56.98. Kyle Atras shaved 38 seconds off his 500 free time with a clocking of 6:40.96 and swam season-bests in the 100 back (1:15.69) and the 100 free (1:05.90). A.J. Smith swam a personal best in the 50 free (28.27), the 200 breast (3:03.35) and the 100 breast (1:21.09). Hood placed seventh overall in the team standings with 160 points.

Senior Katie Hitchens closed out an outstanding four-year career in impressive fashion at the Capital Athletic Conference championships at St. Mary's College (Md.). The sprinting specialist will leave Hood as one of the fastest freestylers in Hood history after rewriting the school record in the 50 free with a time of 25.00 seconds, breaking the previous record which remained in the annals since the 1991 season. Senior Amy Kaufman (above) had a solid farewell performance as well, qualifying for the championship final in the 400 individual medley (5:00.91), the 500 free (5:28.01) and the 1650 free (18:47.27). Freshman Kim Wolfgang reached the championship final in the 200 back (2:21.46) and the 400 individual medley (5:09.43). The Blazers finished in sixth place in the team standings with 242 points.

Freshman Ola Komolafe had an impressive outing in his first ever college meet finishing sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 52.6 seconds breaking the indoor record set by his brother and teammate Tomilayo. Komolafe also finished seventh in the 200 with a time of 23.26 seconds which ties the fastest time in Hood history, indoors or out. Tomilayo Komolafe competed in the 400 meters finishing with a time of 54.80. Komolafe also finished the 55 meter dash in 7.20 seconds. Blair Ames (above) set a new record in the mile with a time of 4:56.53 to outpace Steve Delaney’s school record and set a new indoor record. Jamie Warrick finished 38th in the shot put and set a new record with a throw of 27', 6.5”. The Blazers travel to Dickinson College Saturday for their fourth indoor competition.

Lauren Smith set a new indoor record in the 3000 meters with a time of 12:01.69, finishing just 0.59 seconds behind the outdoor standard. Smith also ran a record time of 2:42.48 in the 800 meters, the first time she has run the event this season. April Penn finished the mile in 7:12.39 and also competed in the 800 finishing with a time of 3:13.35. The Blazers travel to Dickinson College Saturday for their fourth indoor competition.
