Three members of the Hood College men's cross country team journeyed to neighboring Mount St. Mary's University for a meet against area Division I programs, including the University of Maryland, the U.S. Naval Academy and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Juniors Blair Ames and Brendan Greenlees (above) as well as senior Nick Manning kicked off the 2008 campaign racing in less-than-ideal conditions at the Mount's rain-soaked course in Emmitsburg. Ames was Hood's top finisher with a time of 19:18.01 followed by Manning (19:32.33) and Greenlees (19:44.97).

Three members of the Hood College women's cross country made the short jaunt to Emmitsburg, Md., Friday afternoon to compete against Division I programs from across the region in Hood's first competition of the fall at Mount St. Mary's University. Hood was the only Division III squad at the meet. Senior captain Danielle Sgro held her own against some of the area's best runners, finishing 37th of 66 competitors with a time of 21:22.81. The freshman duo of Maria Moss (above) and Sarah Morris, competing in their first cross country race in the blue and gray, finished with clockings of 23:35.81 and 24:03.49, respectively.

Senior and first-year Hood goalkeeper Jen Lacy (above) made 17 saves for the Blazers in a 4-0 loss to the Marywood University Pacers Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both programs. Lacy, a transfer from Florida Atlantic University who also lettered for Hood's softball team last spring, made her first career start in the cage, turning away nine shots in the first half and eight in the second. The Blazers' home and Capital Athletic Conference opener is slated for 5 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 3 against the No. 2-ranked team in NCAA Division III, the Salisbury University Sea Gulls, at Thomas Athletic Field.

Hood won its season opener for just the second time in its five-year history (and the first since 2005) with a 1-0 double overtime win over LaRoche College Saturday at the Frostburg State University Tournament. Junior midfielder Quinn Miller (above) knocked in the game-winner in the 103rd minute to lift Hood to the victory. Junior goalkeeper Shawn Fernholz posted the fifth shutout of his Blazer career versus the Redhawks. Miller also scored in a 5-2 loss to Frostburg State Sunday. Freshman midfielder Kyle Hurt notched his first goal in the blue and gray late in the second half. Miller, Fernholz and freshman defender Jon Butterfield were all named to the all-tournament team. Hood's only contest this week is at Goucher College Wednesday. The Blazers' home contest against Waynesburg College originally scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Sept. 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.

The Blazers lost a pair of one-goal contests last week at the Kim Servedio Tournament at Thomas Athletic Field. Freshman midfielder Carlie Colella began her Blazer career on a positive note, assisting on three of Hood's four goals on the weekend. Two of those assists came off corner kicks. Sophomore midfielder Cara Jordan scored a pair of goals against King's College, marking the third multi-goal game of her career. Classmate Katherine Rendon (above) scored the fourth goal of her career Sunday against McDaniel College. Hood opens Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday when the Blazers travel to York College (Pa.) for a 4 p.m. contest.

The Blazers dropped a pair of nonconference matches to the College of Notre Dame (Md.) (14-25, 22-25, 14-25) and Shenandoah University (25-12, 17-25, 21-25, 22-25) Saturday afternoon in a triangular at Gambrill Gymnasium. In the first match against the Gators, junior Ashley Burns (above) paced the Blazers with six kills while sophomore Kristan Hawkins chipped in five. Sophomore Chelsea Weaver led the defense with 12 digs and classmate Kristina Straub set up 11 Blazer kills. Then against Shenandoah, Weaver racked up seven kills and 13 digs to go along with a pair of aces while senior Jamie Gardner amassed a team-high 19 digs to go along with five kills. Freshman Katherine Brosius added 10 digs and a pair of servce aces while fellow newcomer Bailey Runkles notched 13 digs in the contest.
