Volunteer & Service Learning Opportunities

The College's motto, Corde et Mente et Manu (With Heart and Mind and Hand), expresses the value placed on service by the Hood community. Opportunities abound for students to engage in service learning that is community-based and enhances the major field of study. Service is an integral part of campus life. Many students are involved in service projects and community outreach through campus clubs and organizations, the Honors program, the Center for Community Research and more. In addition, more than one-third of recent graduates participated in off-campus volunteer service activities during their time at Hood.

The Career Center & Office of Service Learning provides interested students with the opportunity to learn through service to others.

In the past year, Hood students volunteered at the following organizations:

  • Advocates for Homeless Families
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • Boys and Girls Club of Frederick
  • Frederick Arts Council
  • Frederick Center for Peace
  • Frederick County Animal Shelter
  • Frederick County Hotline
  • Frederick Memorial Hospital
  • Heartly House
  • Volunteer Frederick

We encourage any interested students, faculty or staff to participate in the many volunteer opportunities available in the Frederick community.

Learn about local and regional volunteer opportunities by:

  • Contacting the Career Center & Office of Service Learning at ext. 3583 to make an appointment to speak with the Service Learning coordinator.
  • Using our online system: Linked-2-work. For additional opportunities in the Frederick community, check out www.volunteerfrederick.org.
  • Attending our annual volunteer service fair every fall which is open to the campus and the community to place students in local community agencies. Approximately 25 nonprofit agencies participate each year. This is a great way to meet many agencies at once all in the same place.
  • Checking out the volunteer bulletin board located in the Career Center & Office of Service Learning where many volunteer opportunities are posted.
