Circulation Policies for Associated Borrowers

The Beneficial-Hodson Library invites Associated Borrowers to enjoy our building, our books, our newspapers, and our journals in print on the 2nd floor. You should feel free to consult the reference collection on the 1st floor, and to obtain reference assistance from our librarians.

Associated Borrowers include the following:

  • Advanced Placement Frederick County high school students
  • Faculty members of other institutions of higher education
  • Hood Alumnae
  • Members of the local clergy
  • Teachers in the Frederick County school system
  • Students attending Baltimore Hebrew University, Capital College, Frederick Community College, Goucher College, Maryland Institute College of Art, McDaniel College, and Washington College.

Periodicals, reference books, audio CDs, videos, and DVDs
Cannot be checked out by Associated Borrowers, but may be used within the library building. Photocopiers and listening/viewing equipment are available in the library.

Consortium books
Are not available for borrowing by Associated Borrowers.

Online Journal Articles
Because of licensing restrictions imposed by our vendors, Associated Borrowers do not have access to online journal articles. Check with your home institution or your local public library.

Computer Use
All Hood computers require a network account for access. Only currently-affiliated members of the Hood Community are eligible for such accounts.

Terms of Use for Borrowing Books

Book Loans
Up to five books for 28 days each, with no renewals.

Associated borrowers cannot place a hold on a book that is circulating.

Associated borrowers cannot place a recall on a book that is circulating. Occasionally, the library may need to recall a book before it is due. For example, a book may be needed for a faculty reserve list. These books must be returned promptly. A fine of $1.00 per day will be levied on overdue, recalled books.

Fines are 10 cents per day, with a $5.00 maximum. Associated borrowers with overdue books may not borrow additional books until the overdue book is returned and the fine has been paid.

Unreturned Items
A book is declared "Unreturned" if it is not returned by 30 days after the due date. A borrower having an "Unreturned Book" may not check out or renew any other books. For each "Unreturned Book," the borrower will be billed the replacement cost of the book, plus a $25 Processing Fee. The replacement cost will be determined by a member of our Acquisitions staff. We cannot accept replacements that have been purchased by the patron. If an "Unreturned Book" is later found, we cannot refund the processing fee or the replacement fee.
