FREDERICK, Md.—A celebration of the music of Stephen Foster will be the second concert of the Hood College Summer Chamber Music Festival, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Brodbeck Music Hall.
“The Songs of Stephen Foster” program consists of songs and piano pieces by Foster including well-known favorites such as “Beautiful Dreamer,” “Oh! Susanna” and “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair” plus numerous other selections. Performing in the concert are vocalists Marie Lester, Kate Jackman, Joe Regan and Eric Black; pianist Stefan Petrov; and Hood music instructors Barbara Spicher, flute, and Billy Simms, guitar.
Foster, who lived from 1826 to 1864, is recognized as the composer who was able to capture and express the intersection of the European art music tradition with 19th-century American folk culture.
Other concerts on the Summer Chamber Music Festival schedule are the Sidney Silverman Young Artists Concert July 14, the Phyllis and Ardine Gorden String Concert featuring the Aeolus String Quartet July 21 and the Cole Porter Songbook featuring the Kevin Lewis Jazz Quartet July 28.
