A Place of Significance
Hood College traces its history to 1893, when the Potomac Synod of the Reformed Church of the United States—now the United Church of Christ—established the Woman’s College of Frederick. The College acquired the land on which it now sits in 1897, made possible by a gift from Margaret Scholl Hood, for whom the College was named. Male students have been a part of Hood’s undergraduate and graduate populations since 1971. In October 2002, the Board of Trustees voted to allow men to reside on campus, making the College fully coeducational in fall 2003. We continue to preserve time-honored values and traditions that have made Hood the special institution we know it to be. Among Hood’s many attributes that will remain unchanged are its competitive admissions standards, outstanding academic programs, personal attention from a caring and committed faculty and staff and a friendly, inviting campus. Hood has been named:
- A “Great School at a Great Price” in U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges in the Universities-Master’s category;
- A “Best Value” in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance; and
- One of the “Best Northeastern Colleges” and “America’s Best Values” in the Princeton Review.
