Distinctive Programs
Strong in the SciencesOur science majors conduct research in collaboration with faculty mentors, both in the laboratories and outside of class. Internships in nearby organizations such as the National Cancer Institute give students experiences that make them more competitive and confident as they enter employment or graduate study after graduation.
Exceptional Opportunities with the Summer Research Institute
Summer research grants enable students to participate with faculty members as full members of research teams, gaining experience usually available only to graduate students.
Addressing Community Education Needs
Hood has designed its professional education programs to meet the needs of this region’s rapidly growing elementary and secondary school population. A partnership with the Frederick County Public Schools provides students, beginning in their sophomore year, with opportunities to work with school children while being taught by both on-campus faculty and experienced teachers in the field. The three master’s programs enroll both Hood graduates and other members of the community seeking to further their professional careers.
Onica Prall Child Development School
The laboratory school is one of only 60 such clinical programs on college campuses in the United States. Hood’s early childhood education students are able to integrate their classroom experiences with opportunities
to observe and teach young children. Established in 1929, the school has
a proud tradition of service to Frederick’s preschool population.
Connections to the Business Community
Hood places its economics and management students in a variety
of situations, including internships, that provide practical insights into the thriving business environment in Frederick and the business and science corridor leading south through Montgomery County. Regional businesses also rely on our management programs to further the education of their upwardly mobile staff members.
Rigorous Social Work Program
The social work major requires an intensive 420-hour internship in one
of the many participating local nonprofit organizations, providing students with their initial experiences as professional social workers. The students deal directly with clients and function as members of an organization’s staff, applying theory to practice.
Model Thanatology Program
Hood’s program, the first M.A. in thanatology in the country, has become
a model for other colleges planning such programs. Students gain a deeper understanding of the impact of death on the individual and society and are prepared to meet the special needs of the bereaved, the terminally ill and their families.
Expanding Horizons Through Study Abroad
Students widen their global perspectives with study, research and internships in Australia, Central and South America, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, South Africa, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom, among others.
