The Beneficial-Hodson Library offers access to a wide range of materials in a wide range of formats.
ShaRC Catalog: ShaRC, our on-line catalog, is a good place to begin your research. You can search by title, author, subject headings, or keyword; and limit your search to certain types of materials or to materials owned by Hood. ShaRC lists the books, journals, audio-visual materials, and e-books available at Hood and our partner schools in the Maryland Interlibrary Consortium, or MIC. The participating libraries include those of Baltimore International College, Loyola/Notre Dame, Mount Saint Mary’s, Stevenson, and Washington Adventist. Members of the Hood community have access to most of the materials from each of these institutions.
E-Books: Can be accessed through the catalog, where you’ll search for them like any other books. If a useful title appears in the results list, you can simply click on the “Hood” link, toward the bottom of the catalog record, to be taken directly to the e-book. Ebrary books can also be accessed directly from the Ebrary website. Sometimes, particularly if you’re not sure what you might be looking for, this can produce more useful results than searching the catalog because the Ebrary search engine searches through the full text of the books in its database.
WorldCat: WorldCat lets you search the holdings of over 10,000 libraries, some in our area, some in far corners of the world. It is a powerful tool to help discover the universe of materials on a topic. It provides links to some digital materials such as articles and audio files which may be viewed directly or downloaded.
Books Quick from MIC: If you find a title in ShaRC that you want but it’s not at Hood, you can usually borrow it from the MIC partner who owns it. The easiest way to do this is to simply go to the header at the top of the ShaRC page for the item and click on the “Request” button. This will allow you to request the title electronically (you’ll need your library barcode!) for next-day delivery (if the request is placed Sunday through Thursday) by our courier.
Area Libraries and Bookstores: Links to websites and contact information for selected local and regional bookstores and libraries.
