The College Archives are housed in the Archives storage room on the second floor of the Beneficial-Hodson Library, with a small annex in Room 2005. The Archives is the repository for administrative records and official publications that document the history of Hood College, and it includes a large collection of Hood photographs, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and College publications such as the Touchstone yearbooks, course catalogs, and the alumnae/i magazine. The Archives is a rich source of documents dealing with College events and the people who were instrumental in them.
Among the collections are documents and correspondence of Hood faculty and alumnae. In this collection you will find the papers of Leah Allen, professor of Astronomy, Sydney Silverman, professor of Biology, and James Byrne Ranck, chairman of the History and Political Science Department, among others. The personal papers and memorabilia of former Art Department faculty member and Frederick artist, Helen L. Smith are gathered, along with many early sketches and working templates, into the Helen Smith Collection.
The College Archives is open by appointment only. Please call 301-696-3934.
