Biography
William D. Powell III, a native of Frederick, Maryland, began his piano studies at the age of seven with Kathryn Z. Nicodemus. Bill continued his musical education at Hood College in Frederick , studying with Wayne L. Wold and Noel K. Lester. He then studied at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA, where he earned a master’s degree in music in 2004 and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance in 2012, studying with Steven Cooksey.
Bill is currently director of music and organist at Glade United Church of Christ in Walkersville, Maryland, traditional choir director and organist at St. Timothy’s Roman Catholic Church in Walkersville, and assistant organist at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Frederick.
In addition to his church positions, Bill is an adjunct instructor of piano at Hood College, teaches private piano and organ lessons, and has given organ recitals in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, and Schifferstadt, Germany. He has also had opportunities to perform several major classical works with local choral groups, including Handel’s Messiah, Brahms’ Requiem, Purcell’s Te Deum Laudamus, Mozart’s Requiem and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms among others. Bill is a pianist and keyboardist for Chris Collins and Boulder Canyon, a nationally touring John Denver tribute band. He resides in Gaithersburg, Maryland with his wife and two sons.
