Simone Williams is a doctoral student at Hood College and serves as the manager of marketing and communications at United Aviate Academy. With a decade of experience in the aviation industry, she is deeply committed to advancing inclusivity and diversity within the field. We spoke with Williams about her studies in organizational leadership, her extensive background in aviation and how her doctoral work has contributed to her career development.

Could you briefly describe your career and educational background?

I earned my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a master’s in human resource development from Bowie State University. Since 2015, I have worked in the aviation industry. Throughout my studies, I balanced my academic career with my role as a flight attendant, attending school at night while continuing to work.

What led you to study at Hood College?

When my professor at Bowie State University, Erica Bailey, shared that she was pursuing a Ph.D. locally, she mentioned Hood College. Curious, I asked her about the professors, the campus, the commute, the curriculum and support from professors. I had never visited a campus like Hood’s before, and when she spoke about her positive experiences there, I immediately thought, "I can do that too." Although I am from the Washington Metropolitan Area; I was not familiar with the City of Frederick, so this presented a new opportunity for me.

One of the key reasons I chose Hood College was its proximity to home. The option to attend classes on Saturdays fit well with my schedule and provided a fresh perspective on learning. I am now able to apply the lessons I learned at my previous universities in a more practical, direct way at Hood. The knowledge I am gaining is directly impacting my work and contributing to my personal growth. Additionally, I strive to continue to be a role model for my twin sister, who attends Morgan State University, and my younger sister, who is pursuing her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at California Baptist University. Family is always my top priority, no matter what.

Why did you choose to study organizational leadership?

My goal has been to promote equity and inclusivity within corporate America by addressing and removing barriers that disproportionately affect individuals from diverse backgrounds. I sought to create opportunities that were previously unavailable, with a focus on fostering fairness and equal access. By returning to school, I aimed to acquire the knowledge and expertise necessary to challenge systemic inequities, reshape organizational practices and contribute to a more inclusive and just workplace environment.

How did you first get involved with aviation?

My journey in aviation began as a child, when my first flight was with Air Jamaica to Montego Bay (MBJ), an experience that left an impression. Little did I know that aviation would later become such a significant part of my life.

I went on to become a flight attendant for six and a half years, primarily based in Washington, D.C. The lifestyle of a flight attendant was unique and often challenging, but it was also deeply rewarding. After my time as a flight attendant, I transitioned into a recruiter role with that same regional airline. This shift allowed me to leverage my people skills while also aligning with my passion for promoting equity and inclusivity within the aviation industry. While there, I was able to build my own brand and remain committed to ensuring greater representation in aviation by fostering diversity and inclusivity, all while working to dismantle barriers for underrepresented groups in the industry.

What do you do as a manager of marketing and communications at United Aviate Academy?

In my role, I manage all communications, public relations and social media platforms for United Aviate Academy. I focus on showcasing students’ achievements, documenting their journeys from start to finish. In many communities, the prospect of becoming a pilot is not often considered, and I strive to challenge that perspective through strategic public communication and networking within the community. By highlighting the accomplishments of our students and engaging with local networks, I aim to inspire others and provide the encouragement necessary to pursue careers in aviation.

How have your doctorate in organizational leadership studies aided you in your career?

This experience has enabled me to work with a multi-framework mindset, encouraging me to approach challenges from diverse perspectives. It has taught me not to internalize every situation, but to engage with alternative viewpoints. I’ve learned that effective leadership begins with establishing a clear understanding of an organization’s goals while identifying the leadership style that aligns with its values, vision and mission. Leadership skills essential to success include the ability to adapt, support autonomy in the workplace and navigate adversity. I have embraced transformational leadership with a focus on diversity and inclusivity, and an understanding that the success of any organization depends on the ability of its leaders to execute effective plans of action. When leaders can inspire commitment and foster a sense of ownership, it not only drives progress toward organizational goals, but also has a positive spillover effect on morale and economic growth.

When do you expect to graduate from Hood?

I am currently in the dissertation phase of my doctoral journey, with an expected completion around 2026.

Are there any fun facts or trivia about yourself that you would like to share?

My stepfather is from Benin, West Africa, and as a result, I was raised in a French-speaking household. This upbringing broadened my cultural perspective and enhanced my ability to navigate and appreciate diverse linguistic and cultural traditions. It has also motivated me to actively promote cultural awareness and inclusivity in my professional life.
