How do I apply for admission? What are the deadlines?

You can apply to Hood College at www.hood.edu/apply - there, you will find information regarding our application deadlines. Because we operate on a rolling admission basis, we review applications as we receive them, sending out admission decisions within two to three weeks of receiving all application materials. Hood does not offer early decision or early action. We do, however, encourage all students to apply sooner rather than later to ensure the best opportunities for scholarships.

What are the most important factors for admission? How can I make my application stronger?

We at Hood emphasize well-roundedness in our applications. We want to see that you have challenged yourself in your courses, but also that you have filled your time outside of school with enriching activities, like clubs, jobs, sports, or leadership activities. The best way to make your application stronger is to have it reviewed by another set of eyes. Have someone else take a look at your essay to proofread it! As you’re thinking about applying to college, also consider joining clubs or organizations at your high school that you’re interested in or passionate about.

Are standardized tests required?

Hood College is test optional, meaning no SAT or ACT scores are required for admission or scholarships.

What’s the average GPA and SAT/ACT score for accepted students?

The average accepted student at Hood has around a 3.4 weighted GPA in high school. Because we are test optional, we do not have an average SAT score reported.

Maintenance/Renewal

Scholarships are awarded to new students and are renewable throughout the student’s undergraduate career (scholarship may be received for a maximum of eight semesters). Students must achieve the minimum semester grade-point average for their scholarship tier, maintain satisfactory academic progress toward their degree and be enrolled full-time. Students whose grade point average drops below the required minimum will receive a warning. Two consecutive semesters below the minimum grade point average will result in a reduction to or elimination of the award. Students with reduced or eliminated scholarships may recover the original award amount by achieving the required semester grade point average.

Stackable Awards

The following institutional awards may be awarded in addition to the above merit scholarships.

  • BOA Leadership (amount varies) Awarded to high-achieving students who have taken active leadership roles in their high school, community and/or region.
  • Hodson-Gilliam (amount varies) Awarded to high-achieving students of color.
  • Honors ($2,000) Awarded to students who have been admitted to the Hood College Honors Program.
  • Legacy ($1,000) Awarded to full-time students whose parent, sibling or grandparent received a Hood bachelor's or master's degree.

Chair of the Board

This highly prestigious scholarship provides four new full-tuition awards to academically superior students in each entering class.

Recipients will have the distinctive opportunity to benefit from the challenging and rewarding academic programs Hood offers in a supportive and welcoming community with all tuition costs fully covered by the scholarship. All first-year students who have been accepted to Hood College by January 15 will be considered for this prestigious award. Successful candidates will have a record of outstanding academic achievement as well as accomplishments outside the classroom. It is expected that recipients will have demonstrated the talent, ability, academic achievement and motivation to compete for national and international recognition by the end of their undergraduate careers.

All candidates will be invited to attend Scholars' Day in February, which will include a scholarship interview, meetings with faculty and current honors students, and lunch with the president and provost. Four Chair of the Board Scholars will be named within the two weeks following Scholars' Day, and all Scholars' Day attendees will receive $5000 in additional scholarship funds as well as a stipend account of $2000 that they may use following the end of their second year at Hood for research, study abroad or other related educational expenses.

This award is renewable annually, up to four years, provided the recipient maintains a GPA of no less than 3.5 and makes satisfactory progress toward a bachelor’s degree. For more information, contact the Office of Admission at 301-696-3400 or admission@hood.edu.
