Don Reitz Ceramics Exhibit

March 2 through April 15

FREDERICK, Maryland—The ceramic work of the late Don Reitz, an internationally renowned artist, will be on display in Hood College’s Whitaker Campus Center Gallery from March 2 through April 15.

The exhibition, titled “All Fired Up: The Ceramic Sculpture of Don Reitz,” will showcase his work, which is loaned to Hood for the exhibit by Leatrice S. and Melvin B. Eagle. An opening reception is scheduled for March 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Whitaker Commons. Lee Eagle will give a gallery talk, called “Exploring the Art of Don Reitz,” at 4:30 p.m. during the reception.

The exhibit will include pieces from throughout Reitz’ career, including sculpture, wall hangings, tea bowls and prints. It is a small sample of the breadth and depth of his artistic output and a testament to his artistic genius and versatility.

Born in 1929, Reitz led a life of exploration, teaching and creating art. He began his teaching career and the serious work of making art in 1962. He taught and energized thousands of students around the world, all while creating thousands of works of art. Reitz was an active participant in the ceramic art communities in the U.S. and abroad until his death in 2014, at the age of 85. He was an integral part of the group of artists who dramatically changed the future of ceramics in the second half of the 20th century.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Sponsored by the Hood College Ceramic Arts program, it is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jenna Gianni at gianni@hood.edu.
