Expert Gives Seminar on Land Use Policies

FREDERICK, Maryland—An expert in land use policies will present a seminar at Hood College on April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Dreiling Seminar Room in Coblentz Hall.

Royce Hanson, a recognized leader in land use policies in the nation, has gained much of his expertise from his experiences in Montgomery County in Maryland. His insights into cooperation between those developing land and those committed to protecting natural land are highly appropriate for the ongoing decisions in the future direction of planning in Frederick County.

Hanson’s recent book, “Suburb: Planning Politics and the Public Interest,” explores how a century of strategic land-use decisions served the public interest in Montgomery County and transformed the county from an unknown area into the home of a million people and a half-million jobs. It also discusses the roles of politics, business developers and residents in the long-term planning process.
