Monocacy Elementary Students Visit Campus

FREDERICK, Maryland—More than 110 fifth-grade students from Monocacy Elementary School will visit Hood College on April 20 for the second phase of a partnership project that started in the fall.

The first phase of this program was a pen pal project in the fall. Hood education students wrote back and forth with the fifth-graders about a common text they all read. They discussed and wrote about the text in letters to each other. Then the Hood students visited Monocacy to see their pen pals and discuss the project.

On April 20, those fifth-graders are coming to campus to get a taste of a college learning environment. They will attend classes run by Hood education majors and professors in writing, math, STEM, science and Spanish, take tours, hear from a student panel and more.

The goals of the project were to partner college students with students from a Title I elementary school for authentic literacy (reading and writing) activities, and to encourage these young children to think about attending college one day.
