Rededication of Columns to Conclude Hood College’s 125th Anniversary
FREDERICK, Maryland—Hood College will conclude its 125th anniversary celebration by rededicating the four columns on Alumnae Hall on Sept. 12 at 3 p.m.
The four Ionic white columns that support Hood’s historic Alumnae Hall are named Hope, Opportunity, Obligation and Democracy—the first letters spelling HOOD—and they were dedicated by the Classes of 1915, 1916, 1917 and 1918. For many, they define the spirit and principles of a Hood education. Members of the Classes of 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 will rededicate them and discuss what each core value means.
Kara Poole, president of the Class of 2019, will speak about Hope: to believe that everyone can have a positive impact in the world and that education is instrumental in creating and sustaining hope.
Christian Hoch, president of the Class of 2020, will discuss Opportunity: to fully use one’s talents and skills to realize professional and personal achievement and to help create and realize opportunities for others.
Lily Bean, president of the Class of 2021, with talk about Obligation: to fulfill personal and professional responsibilities with integrity and to be a responsible steward and servant to the betterment of others and this world.
Martha Burkheimer, member of the Class of 2022, will address Democracy: to embrace diversity, foster freedom of thought and expression, and to promote engaged citizenship both in self and others.
The ceremony is free and open to the public. Light refreshments to immediately follow on the Whitaker Campus Center patio.
