Second Annual Discovering the Humanities Conference
FREDERICK, Maryland—The Hood College Humanities Council and the Master of Arts in Humanities program are hosting the second annual “Discovering the Humanities” conference on Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Whitaker Campus Center Commons.
The conference will provide students the opportunity to experience an academic conference, practice presenting their research and get to know others with similar interests.
Students from Hood College, Shepherd University, St. John’s College, West Virginia University, and the University of Maryland College Park will present seminar papers, Departmental Honors papers, research projects or theses produced for any humanities-related course in art and archaeology, English, global languages and cultures, history, music, philosophy, religion, or any other humanities program unique to their institution.
The Hood students presenting include Olivia Imirie, Jordan Tunzi, Peter Routson, Frances Morgan, Payton Mills, Taylor Polito, Jessica Hopkins, Nicholas Fenell, Gina Sterling and Xiang Shu.
Jessica Berman, Ph.D., professor of English and director of the Dresher Center for the Humanities at UMBC, will deliver the keynote address, titled “Humanities Research as Public Practice: Asking, Listening, and Learning Across Disciplines” at 1 p.m. in Whitaker Commons. Berman helps run the Dresher Center’s Inclusion Imperative project, which is designed to advance diversity and inclusion in the humanities at UMBC and in the region. She has also written and edited several books and other publications about humanities and ethics.
