Senior Studio Art Exhibits

FREDERICK, Maryland—Hood College will hold two senior studio art exhibits in the next month.

From April 26 through May 6, the work of Corissa Collins and Gabriela Rivas will be on display in the Whitaker Campus Center Gallery. From May 3-13, the work of Ashley Bailey, Shana Hafele and Leigh Anne Brader will be on display in the Hodson Gallery in the Tatem Arts Center. Both galleries are open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Collins is a digital photographer. Her show, titled “Monachopsis,” will feature her work in photography, shooting in color, and creating stark contrast black and white images, sometimes focusing on one or two colors to develop an intentional mood. The purpose of her work is to allow the viewer to recognize the idea behind each photograph and capture the emotion that associates with the sense of not belonging. Collins will graduate in May.

Rivas is a mixed media artist. Her show, titled “Into the Light” will display colorful and shimmering installations in various sizes. Her work sends viewers on a visual journey and leaves them mesmerized. Her passion for EDM (Electronic Dance Music) inspired her experiential installation art, borrowing visual tropes from music festivals and visual anomalies. Rivas will graduate in May 2019.

The reception for this gallery is scheduled for April 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Whitaker Gallery with the artist talk at 6:15 p.m.

Bailey’s exhibit, “Unplugged,” will display a group of works in double exposure and collage photography portraying musicians in the most raw and emotional sense. Through interviews and live concerts, she was able to translate the most powerful aspects in their songwriting through her own vision. Bailey will be graduating in December 2018.

Hafele is a mixed media gouache and oil painter, whose “Dreamscape” show creates a dreamlike space through the use of fast brush strokes and colors. She intends her work to allow the viewer to understand and feel the state that these dreams create. Hafele will graduate in 2019.

Brader is a local fine art wedding photographer. Her exhibit will display her newest work, “A Woman’s Place,” a collection of large-scale photographs of women in their homes, confronting the viewer and emphasizing their power to take ownership of themselves. She applies her artistic visions and documentary-style approach to this collection, and captures meaningful representations of female power in the 21st century. Her work is characterized by natural tones, soft light and candid moments.

The reception for this exhibit is scheduled for May 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Hodson Gallery with the artist talk at 6:15 p.m.
